Loaners can cost you more than you think!!! !

tfung, I just read your post on loaners. You'll get a kick out of this!

Acme Auto Rental in Connecticut was surcharging drivers of their rentals for speeding! The cars are equipped with GPS units which record their velocity. If drivers exceeded 79 mph for over 2 minutes, they were surcharged a fine by the rental company. The news report didn't state the amount of the surcharge.

The rental company calculated a value of 37 cents per mile for additional wear and tear on their vehicles due to the exccessive speed. How dis they come up with this value!!! Did they hire an "automotive" actuary???

The Connecticut (Supreme Court) ordered that Acme refund it's customers the additional charge because they failed to warn their customers about the fine.

At 79 mph our M5s and Z8s are just waking up!

wow.. how can they charge you for speeding without telling the customer in the first place? I can understand why they want to implement this fine, but it's a bit deceptive to not tell the user.. It's just the same if they decide to add a $1 per mile surcharge for regular wear and tear, AFTER you return the car back...

thats why theres a lawsuit and the state said they couldnt do it. btw- they claim the speeding charge is for excessive wear and tear. anyone knows that this is absurd. there is more wear and tear on the car at the parking lot than on the highway.
