Shifter slop question

Which part causes front/rear shifter slop/looseness(not side to side)? Is it the shift lever bearing(#3 here:RealOEM.com BMW E39 M5 GEARBOX SHIFTING PART Or is it something else? Thanks!!

I'd say there is no "one thing" that can be definitively diagnosed from here...

Looking at that dwg, the bushing #5 could be 'bad' on one side, allowing the shifter to 'twist' more- this would mimic the 'works fine up and down but sloppy to the side'...

Take it apart and check all components. Better yet, toss in an SSK while there,
