We picked up our new '02 Sterling Grey/Silverstone M5 today at 10am. I still can't believe we have an M5 even though it's sitting in the garage next to the 7. My neighbor came over when we got home (IloveM5s) and asked my dad, "So you like the car??" My dad said "Of course, all though I didn't want one at all... until I drove it." My dad let me drive it halfway home from the dealership and then he took over. At home, he threw me the keys and said, "take it out for a while, I'm going downtown so I'm taking the 7 because I don't want to park the M5 down there." I don't think anyone in their right mind would throw their 16-year-old son they keys to their brand new 400hp M5. Hey, I'm not complaining The car felt almost hard to drive at first (as agreed by IloveM5s) but after a while, we both got used to it. It's fast as hell, but it's not AS fun to throw around like the C4S. The C4S has one of the most brutal clutches I've ever used, but I got used to it in about 30 seconds and I can shitf/go from the line like a dream. The M5s took me about 30 MINUTES to get used to, especially leaving the line smoothly. After using sport mode, the car felt unresponsive and almost dead (especially in 1st) w/o sport mode on. When I leave the line (after I let the clutch all the way out of course) it feels like I have to press down halfway on the gas pedal to get the car to do anything! Is this normal?? In sport mode however, I found it very easy to leave the line, but too touchy for normal driving in 3rd and 4th. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the car in the least bit--it just seems like it will take some time to get used to (once you get going, shifting is very very smooth). The feeling of instant power and tourque like that in pretty much any gear is unexplainable. I can't wait until it's broken in so I can take it past 5k rpms! All in all, the car is amazing... and I can't wait to drive it tomorrow!

M5 engines are very tight (less than responsive) when they leave the factory (despite that, they burn oil like crazy for the first 10k miles). The engine will get lots more responsive in "normal" mode after the first 7-8k miles or so. I used to use sport mode all the time, but now hardly ever since the engine's been broken-in.
The engine will loosen up yes, totally agree. My engine just gets stronger and stronger.
As far as the 'hard to drive' thing, I think the more appropriate word would be 'different.' I have driven a 993 before, and they are seriously totally different machines.
Congrats on the new car, you will love it!! Oh yeah, we did respect eh break in rules now, heehee.
Congrs and welcome to the club. Yes i agree with the rest... take it very easy on the engine since its brand and hold your urges to about 1500 miles or more.... Let the engine break in properly and then brin the C4 on
You have to remember though that they are both 2 completely different cars. Its just amazing how a car like the M5 with its weight can be amazingly damn good in handling, ride, and power. Its the best and im happy that im an M5 owner

Congratulations to you and your father, 9934S! Boy, does she look beautiful! Thanks for the wonderful delivery pictures. Just remember to adhere to the break-in rules which means never pressing the accelerator more than half way. And don't engage Sport mode before the oil temp. has reached full operating temperature.

Break-in? I don't think they get this concept We must've told his dad 15 times..but noooooope..he still takes it to redline
And 994S, i don't wanna hear that garbage about waiting for it to break in so you can rev above 5k. You and I both know you shifted at @6k a few times:p

WHAT!?!??!?! You joking right?? I know it aint my car but... it hurts to hear someone not breaking the car in properly... Oh man... I'm about to take back my "CONGRATS" that I said earlier if you are not breaking in the car properly. Also make sure u warm up the car too! U do know that when cold the cylinders are not totally round... more oval. Thats why u need to warm up the car before driving it hard, to make sure they are round.

The first few times I switched between the Porsche and the M5, it took me a few blocks to adjust to the clutch. Now, I have "ASR" - Active Seat Recognition - basically, my butt knows which car it is in, and it reprograms my brain without me even thinking about it.
Switching back to the M5 does mean relaxing in every sense of the word. Not only is it more relaxing to be in, you have to relax your senses - a more delicate touch on everything to properly feel what it is telling you.
And as a gentle warning, here is a cautionary, and 100% true tale - when I was 17 my dad got a new car - a Mercedes 450SLC. It was deceptive in that it had gobs of torque and was quiet and smooth. He tossed me the keys one night. I combined several stupid decisions (unfamiliar car, unfamiliar road, nightime, new car with stiff steering, etc.) into one and nearly totalled the car - could have even killed myself. Somehow or other I was lucky, ended up between the cliff I almost went over and the mountain side I almost ran into, still on the road, only facing up the hill I had previously been coming down, with all the idiot lights lit up because the engine had killed through the violence of my correcting/countersteering/overcorrecting/spinning. I was extremely lucky - no damage was done. It lit right off when I turned the key, and I drove home a much wiser man - he never found out. Of course, going in, I thought I was in complete control.
You are a lucky, lucky kid that your dad trusts you enough to hand you the keys to the beast. PLEASE, PLEASE - be careful with your dad's car! If you drove the C4S you probably developed some good skills - but remember, it does communicate better than the M5, and it had all-wheel drive to boot. The M5 is an easy car to drive - but it can't save anyone from their own stupidity.
