Information required to give you a good answer:

* what kind of computer will you use it with?

* what kind of printer will you use it with? (if any)

* what do you want to take pictures of (eg- family/ friends or nature pictures)

* how big a camera do you want?

* how many pictures do you want the camera to be able to take per memory device?

* how accurate do you want colors to be?

* what software will you use for photo adjustment (if any)?

I'd like to add 4 more questions to help you decide.

What is your price range? $400 these days buys a good one, $700 gives you more, $1000 buys a great "point & shoot", and then there are the SLR type that can be $2000-$5000.

What do you want to do with the pictures? For viewing on the computer or posting on the web, the 1-2 mega pixel cameras are fine but if you want better prints, go with a 3 mega pixel camera or better. For the best 8x10 or larger blow ups, the new 4 & 5 mega pixel cameras should be better. Printer quality can make a BIG difference here. That is a whole 'nother topic.

How much quality/features do you need? Do you like to experiment or just point & shoot? Optical zoom range is important to me. I had to get a 2x adapter to extend the range of mine. Digital zooms greatly compromise picture quality. The more expensive cameras also have better & faster lenses for improved picture quality and the SLR types handle any number of professional quality lenses.

Do you have a current camera and any brand favoritism? I'm considering a Nikon D1 to make use of my Mikon 35mm lenses. Any other digital SLR camera would require a whole new set of lenses for me.

There are many brands of fine mid priced cameras so it is not an easy answer.

all of the above are excellent questions. my recommendations in the high-end consumer range ($750-1000) would be the following:

sony dsc-f707 (5mp, 5x ziess zoom lens, etc.)...my camera
canon g2 (4mp, 3x lens) great, smaller camera
minolta dimage 7 (5mp, 7x lens, some issues but still a good cam)

on the pro side (digi slr) you will spend $3000-5000 just for the body....

happy to offer advice or to post pix from my sony 707....

i would suggest you go to the following site, amazing resource (equivalent to this site) for info on digital imaging:

www.dpreview.com

there are messageboards by brand as well as reviews on every camera out there....good luck!!
