I'm not sure about the active seats, but I want to say that's a comfort seat option.. not available on the M sport seats.
In my opinion the rain sensor works great...
Yes and no.. it just gives the headlights a blast of concentrate.. which can be helpful in the winter time when the muck is everywhere, the headlights get filmed over pretty quick.
There is no adjustability for the upper half of the backrest, if that's what you mean. These seats aren't anywhere near as complicated as E60 seats, but they are still very, very good.
The flat tire monitor, like most if not all other monitors; gives you a warning when the PSI is down a certain amount. Others can comment more on this.. I haven't had a flat in the M, or low pressure.
Can't comment on the M audio, and as for pics.. do a search for angel eye upgrades and interior LED upgrades and you can find tons of pics.
1) Do all e39 m5s have ActiveSeat? If not, do any of them? Also...how do you guys like this feature?
2)How good do the rain sensors work?
3) Is there any point to the headlight cleaning system?
4) Do any e39 m5s have a shoulder control switch on the seat?
5) Is the flat tire monitor any good?
6) How does the M Audio system sound (as seen in the 2001 and later models)?
7) Does anyone have any pictures of what the inside (and outside) of the car looks like at night?
These are my thoughts, obviously a lot of these are opinion questions and not simple yes/no.
1. Not sure what Active Seats are, so cant comment..
2. They work good for me. I have sensor off until it starts raining enough that I need wipers, then I let it do its thing. Small mists/sprinkles dont bother me so I dont leave it on all the time. When I use it the system performs great. In other vehicles I manually control the wipers every time I want the window cleared off, cant stand the constant rate.
3. To me no. It ends up making a mess of the hood and window. If I ever get my front bumper redone, they will be covered over. Might be of more use in certain areas, but I dont live in one I guess.
4. Not sure what this questions means.
5. If you set it up then yes its good. If you make a pressure change, reset the system... On that note, I have had a handful of false alarms, mostly due to weirdness in the road. For some reason with my old rubber I could make the system go off in a specific lane of freeway here, since I got new tires its been fine... I dont use it as the final say, but its a nice notification that you have a major issue, still check tires regularly though.
6. I have a 2000 and like the audio system, but am not an audio snob...
7. Plenty of night shots are out there... Look for the Interior lighting thread, I am sure there are some in there. Here is a shot of mine at night after doing new Angel Eyes and Fog Light bulbs.. http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/att...5-lights-2.jpg

1) I think ActiveSeats are only on the e60. If they were available on the e39, I they're really, really rare.
2) I think they work fine. The only annoying thing is that when you turn the car off, you have to move the lever to off and then on again to turn them on. This is to prevent you from accidentally having them come on in an automatic car wash, but most of us don't torture our cars that way.
3) Yes, for the reasons VetteRacer said.
4) Don't know what you're asking.
5) Works, except it barely tells you in time. It works not by detecting pressure drop, but by change in rotational speed (using ABS sensors) of the flat tire relative to the others. By the time it figures that out, your tire is pretty flat and usually toast. I'm sure it's balanced against giving too many false alarms. I had a tire go bad on the freeway, and I just barely got over to the exit in time.
6) M Audio is just OK, but better than non-M. Many have upgraded the speakers to those kits sold by Bavarian Soundworks. Others have upgraded the entire system, but that's very expensive because it's not easy to integrate electronics into this car.

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."
anyone know how hard it is to replace the BMW subs with aftermarket ones? I have two Alpine type-r 12"ers and an amp, would I have to drill through the firewall or anything crazy to install these puppies?

1) Active (massage) seat is an further option on the option comfort seats (my GreenBeast is fitted with comfort seats + active function)
2) For me the rain sensor is ok - it`s possible to set the rain sensor (and automatic light sensor) in more or less sensicate function
3) What to you mean by any point?
4) As far as I know: shoulder control (angle at half of height of the backrest of driver and passenger seat to underlay your shoulders) comes with comfort seats (my GreenBeast has "shoulder control".
5) No problem with flat tire monitor - one correct warning, one failure in 40.000 km
6) The individual M-Audio (with 2 25" subs) in my GreenBeast work well - the sound is ok, it is not a db-winner! But in real live you will more listen to an exhaust system!

Yes, but not in the US unless you find an Individual that ordered them.

2)How good do the rain sensors work?
RainX works better - can't remember the last time I turned them on. And Yes, I drive in the rain
Quote:
3) Is there any point to the headlight cleaning system?
Yes - it cleans the headlights.
Quote:
4) Do any e39 m5s have a shoulder control switch on the seat?
Not in the US. See Answer #1

5) Is the flat tire monitor any good?
Ehhh. It has a lot of limitations. As mentioned, it works on rotational differences not actual pressure. To make it worse, it doesn't monitor the rear wheels above 80mph.
If it concerns you, invest in an active monitoring system

6) How does the M Audio system sound (as seen in the 2001 and later models)?
If you want to hear the radio with the windows down above 30-40mph then plan on investing in an upgrade (amp + speakers). Otherwise, I found the stock system to be fine. I find my 4x30 + 2x150 watt system better.
