Having engine problems need to brainstorm

Ok Guys..... I have a 2002 m5 with 63000 miles. I drive pretty mild. I was driving one day and I was accelerating up in 1st gear the rpm drops and proceeds to die. It sputtered like it was running out of fuel. I would press the gas but it was rev a little then burber down and die. It started right upp everytime but it would die the same way. After about 5 or 6 tries it started right like normal and I was able to drive away. I parked the car for about 3 days and started it right away and went back home. The next day it started right up again I drove all day until about 3 when it did the same thing. I took it to a shop. they thought it was the fuel sender unit cause we put fuel in and it started right up again. but the next start up it did the same thing., he called another guy and they said it might be the DK motor. not sure what that does. I grabbed my code reader and it pulled 6 codes. misfires in cylinder 1,2,3,6,7 and PO316. Not sure of that one. I pulled the battery and waited 10 minutes. Reconnected and then cleared the codes. I started fine and the codes are not coming back. But that was just down the block.

Can anyone brainstorm with me on this issue. No unusual smell from the muffler. Has gas. Gas needle does not bounce. Thanks guys

great points. Now the question is if a bad fuel pump. Wouldn't it stay bad and not pump fuel or maybe work sometimes or not. Same for fuel filter.

Is the fuel pump I internal or external ( gas tank )

Fuel pumps can do some weird things from my past experiences... as far as the filter, if you don't know the last time it was changed, it's time. And it's an external filter under the drivers side door.

I had same issues w/ **** loads of scary codes from MAF's going bad (the bmw oem)...the VW will just make engine little slower or worst case hesitate when they go bad but the BMW ones threw my car in limp mode and i had to pull over side of fwy and 5 min later it stopped acting up and could drive.. night mare.

Fuel pump would be my bet. If the filter were clogged the vehicle wouldn't die, it would merely be forced to run at a lower rpm due to reduced flow.

As for the pump, motors don't always "just die" - sometimes it is a slow and painful *****. The pump is located in the right side of the tank and is accessed through a port that becomes visible when you remove the rear seat.

fuel filter sounds like an easy swap so will do that anyway. but the fuel pump, so I guess i would just lift off the rear seat and access the cover to the pump. Remove and then replace with a new one. Has anyone replaced their fuel pump and if so am I making it sound too easy? and also what would be the ball park figure for a new one so I know when a shop is trying to rip me off. Thanks guys.

oh also I have a weird question. I have heard that sometimes it is bad to drive a manual car in low rpm. Like shifting too early or driving like lets say 30 mph in 4th or 5th gear. Any one heard the same or is it just a myth.

Nope, you are the first person, in the 10 years since E39's started rolling off the production line, to have a bad fuel pump OR, Search is your Friend!

Complete myth in our cars. It is only an issue if it causes knocking, and with 400hp, and 200+ of it available from idle, that isn't going to happen in our cars.
