hello
i seem to have developed an intermmitent problem since installing new mafs.
although the m5 seems alot more responsive all the way through the rev range it sometimes starts to hesitate quite aggresively. backfires and then when on tick over begins hunting up and down.
if i turn the car off and then start it again it seems fine, ive also noticed that when driven hard and this problem starts the cats are smelling.
when you install new mafs do you need to disconnect the battery?
the company i got the mafs off say you should disconnect the battery then connect it back up again, they say if that doesnt work i should give the mafs time to adjust to the ecu.
any help would be gladly appreciated.
I never disconnected my battery and i've since swapped back from the VW ones to the OE ones because of a few posts on here and not experienced anything like this. The ECU does take time to adapt but i wouldn't say the car exibhits any of the symptoms you describe. i.e smelly cats or backfiring.
Which company are they from and what MAF's are they. Genuine Bosch??? What part numbers?
Do you still have your originals, if so why did you replace them. If its preventative maintenance as you're now getting lower fuel flow figures during a MAF test then why not swap them back over and see if the symptoms dissapear?

my car was feeling flat and not very responsive, the mafs ive bought are non genuine,i bought them brand new off ebay the company is called driven2automotive,they seem to specialize in this kind of thing
I think you got a bad MAFS. With the exception of the backfiring issue, you car does what my car is doing on the original MAFS. I'll bet this guy on ebay is finding old sensors, cleaning them and reselling them.

12 month warranty according to their site...

I have just installed 2 new MAF's and mine too was hunting up and down for the first 30 miles, it does take time to adapt to them , not sure why but it does. I've now done around 60 miles in 3 journeys and they are fine now.
I know that they are over 400 quid for 2 genuine ones but they are really important parts of the car, so I don't think VW or anyone else's MAF's should be installed, I would stick to the genuine ones , even though they do take the piss with the price.
How much did you save ?....and on hind sight was it worth the hassle .?
ive just got back from a sixty mile trip and the car has been alot better, the company i bought them off has offered me a full refund or replacement.
price £105.00 the pair.
Make sure you have Bosch MAF's, not Pierburg or anything else.
The original Bosch part # ends in "029". The VW equivalent ends in "032".
The VW runs about 4% richer, which the computer should easily compensate for. As noted, it may take 30-50 miles for the computer to adapt.
Regards,
Jerry

Please get a full refund and go to emissioncontrols.co.uk IIRC and get the real deal 029 ones, same as you get from your BMW dealer, for about £315 or try cleaning your old original ones and put them back in if they are stock.
I have my 6 months old (5000 miles) VW MAFS lying around as I took them out after I saw my air fuel ratios were dangerously low.
i got this new software, made it myself in 20 mintes on the comp and already downloaded it into the car.
you can now disconnect all oxygen sensors, all mafs and all cps'. running max high cams all the time and just gotta punch the pedal every time, works awesome car's so fast. race fuel recommended. but make sure it's full throttle or total idle.
can't pass smog but awesome when car takes no regard for air pressure or emissions. I cut off my exaust as well since i cant pass smog anyway.
the software piece is called m5.trozhaan.full.throttle.vrs i can send it over. install it through OBDII
