So upon leaving a friends house early tonight, I accidentally locked the keys in the Trunk. Called AAA and they were unable to unlock it, then called another locksmith whom had 20 or so years experience who was also unable to get in. Only having one key I assume my only option now is to order a second. I respect BMW's engineering of a superior theft protection system, but seriously if I were to try to steal the car, i'd just break a effing window. Worst of all even my wallet is locked in the car.
So yea, pissed and needed to vent......
Edit: despite the thread title, I am fully aware that this was my fault. The cars security system just made it a much larger process than if I were driving something other than a bmw. So stop telling me not to blame the car! The point of this thread was to possibly find solutions not to be reminded numerous times that I am an idiot. I can't wait till one of you starts a similar thread so I can tell you how stupid you are . (I wouldn't actually do that since I would know how bad it sucks to get stuck in this scenario).

I hear you. I got out of my car, opened the trunk, went to take out my backpack for work, closed the trunk, and noticed i was lacking a set of keys. Thank god i left the door unlocked or i would have been screwed. After that i just ordered another key from the stealer. $180 later, aslong as i dont lock my cellphone in the car too, a call home should save me!

Same thing happened to me several years ago. Took me almost 2 hours to go home and get the spare key (had a friend drive me back to my locked car). What I learned from that experience was to:
1. Never unlock just the trunk. I always unlock the doors and then open the trunk manually. l just don't trust myself to avoid making the same mistake.
2. Carry the plastic spare key. Just in case I somehow screw up again.
Only have 1 key here as well... I think I will be ordering a spare from BMW soon...
Anyone know if those plastic keys are avail to atleast unlock door on the car? Or do they have to be the fancy keys to do that?
Matt

Seriously... who has only one key to their car? Buy an extra and keep it in your saftey deposit box. Won't help you out instantly but you know where the f it is. Why is it when you lock the key in the car does the car become stupid? Would you rather have a Chrysler mini van that every 1st grader can steal with their crayola crayon set.

Matt,
You can order the plastic key from the dealer.
I think it's about $60.
I ordered one last year and keep it at home for emergency.
The key is pretty durable. You can unlock any doors and even start the car with it.

Can start the car? Wow thats surprising... Is there no security between key and ignition? My vette has a chip in it...
I wonder if AAA has a freebie CC key for BMWs... Doubtful I know...

The fact that previous owner only had 1 key is a big factor... Its one of those things that I know I should do, but have no real reason to... I have never needed a spare key before, and no plans to need one in the future...
Cant say that the car is stupid, but some cars have had proximity sensors that prevent such a thing from happening, so it could be SMARTER I suppose...
