Edit: despite the thread title, I am fully aware that this was my fault. The cars security system just made it a much larger process than if I were driving something other than a bmw. So stop telling me not to blame the car! The point of this thread was to possibly find solutions not to be reminded numerous times that I am an idiot. I can't wait till one of you starts a similar thread so I can tell you how stupid you are . (I wouldn't actually do that since I would know how bad it sucks to get stuck in this scenario).
Had you chosen the hammer-to-the-head smilie, all those comments would not have appeared! For example (with slightly different facts):
M5 ruined the night by permitting me to fill the trunk with three cases of PBR, letting me drink the hell out of it with my buddy, then trapping my keys safely in the trunk.
I only have one key too. When I open the boot ('trunk') I put my keys in my pocket.
I did catch myself once put the keys on the trunk floor, as I was doing something, and scolded myself & never done that again..
Before I shut the lid, I always pat my pockets. If my keys are in there, I then shut the lid.
I should seriously go get a second key, but the dealers here are so hard to deal with, and they always lose parts that I order in. I hate walking in there.

Are you sure that this works. Because if so I may just call Amex since I get free roadside assistance and try again. I am skeptical as to whether it does after the alarm has sounded.
I am not sure if it will do this after the alarm has sounded. I could try tonight if that helps you.
There should be 4 keys with any BMW. Two of the normal fully functional keys which can remotely open the boot, close all the windows by holding the lock button down, etc.
One Valet key with a grey end that you can give to...a valet which will lock the car, start the car but will not work on the glovebox, boot, or the lock on the folding rear seats.
The last key is the wallet key. Its very small and black and is designed for...your wallet? Its for when you lock your keys in the car.
Really, we should all have all 4. I only had one myself and bought a second normal key, even though I'm dead poor right now. BMW dealers can 'de code' any missing keys from your car so that should a previous owner find them, they won't work.
You can order the plastic key from the dealer.
I think it's about $60.
I ordered one last year and keep it at home for emergency.
The key is pretty durable. You can unlock any doors and even start the car with it.
You're kidding, right? You can start the car with the plastic key?!
Do we not have any sort of anti-theft beyond the fact that our key is a weird shape?
