M5 vs. 550 - Does anyone know what the differance is?

Hi guys, dolls

Been trying to find details of the engine used in the 550i/650 cars. however cant find to much.

I wanted to know the difference between the engines in terms of engineering. I know the 550 is a V8 outputting 382 BHP, so in essence wondering whether it was the same engine!

It's not the same engine. I've raced a 550 (not on public roads) and this is how it went:

The 550 had automatic transmission and my launching technique still sucks. BUT it is very close off the line (about even, perhaps. I was busy trying to shift well). The M5 will inch on the 550 up until around 120mph. The M5 will then proceed to walk it.

Same deal with a rolling start from 2nd gear at 30mph. Very close with the M5 slowly getting ahead until 120, when it gathers the power of the heavens and it starts to open up a big lead on the 550.

That 4.8 liter engine outputs 360HP and 360 ft/lbs. It is not the same hand built S62 we have in our M5s.

The 550 is still an impressive and great looking car. I've considered getting one so my brother could drive it. It would replace his E60 530

I thought our engines weren't hand built?

The last M5 hand built engines were E34 if I am not mistaken.

I think the last M5 that was handbuilt was the E34. I thought that the the engines in the E39 M5 were still handbuilt, the rest of the car is not. I read that somewhere but I cannot remember where.

I drove the 650i with sport automatic last year for one week and made the same experience:

at lower speed the 650i pulls equal to our M539,
at higher speed our old school V8 pull much stronger

but the 650i is an very impressive car!

I am not a hater of 650 since I think it is a great looking car until you look at 1 cosmetic flaw - "the Bangle butt."
