F-U-N With NAV Upgrade
How's this for service? My friend, also my BMW Master Tech came by the house this morning with the NAV programming CD's. I have a 9/01 produced 2002 that came with the new software. I have split screen and as the first board member with a '02 the LAWYER screen "ACCEPT" demand has been driving me nuts for months.
We first installed the dealer CD of v18.0 (SW 3-1/40), which is supposed to be the SAME version that my car was shipped with. Guess what? NO ACCEPT SCREEN, so there is a slight difference but it's not notated by any version change. We then installed the v18.2 (SW 3-1/41)and the LAWYER screen came back!!!!
SON OF A GLITCH!!!!
We re-installed the v18.0 and I have no demand for "ACCEPT." The only downside is that the screen doesn't boot up as fast. It takes about 10 seconds and reads "Note: please wait." The radio comes on immediately and I can deal with a little delay to get rid of the "accept" request. Another thing, my NAV distances in the lower scales read in YARDS now instead of FEET. Again, no problem.

don't know when the switch exactly happened, but the YARDS vs FEET change happened before v18 aka 3-1/40.
i went from my original 3-1/14 to 3-1/30 without the new split screen, etc. i just wanted a newer version and all functionality was the same except that the lower scale distances were in YARDS, not FEET.
then I went up to 3-1/40, labelled as v18 on the dealer discs, and I too never get the ACCEPT screen. glad to know about the 3-1/41 v18.2 - i'm not upgrading until someone tells me they got an 18.x version without the ACCEPT screen.

The yards display happened because your dealer screwed up the first time he tried to upgrade you from version 17 to version 18. He didn't have the key CD, so the upgrade failed. Then he used the MODIC to screw around with your system, changing settings without knowing what he was doing. In the end, he changed your car from the USA setting to one of the European countries and that's why your display says yards instead of feet.
You should go back to the same dealer and ask that he fix what he broke and reset your car to USA with his MODIC. He shouldn't charge you for this since it is his screwup.
I've seen this same thing happen about four other times and it has always happened exactly as I described. The dealer will claim that it wasn't their mistake and that it had something to do with the software upgrade. Sometimes they will claim that this yards display is a "feature" and is normal. But it's not and you can prove it to them by sitting in one of the new 2002 models in the showroom.
Bottom line is that your dealer didn't know what he was doing and he screwed up your car. You should insist that he fix it. Then you should learn to do all your own maintainance so that these morons won't have another chance to screw up your car.

what's a MODIC, and is that something i can do myself? i actually did the 3-1/30 to 3-1/40 upgrade myself. but you're right, i did let my dealer take a shot upgrading me orignally from 3-1/14 to 3-1/30; that's when my scales got changed from feet to yards.
do you know where this feet/yards setting is stored?
by the way, if it's a euro setting v usa, i'm wondering why yards instead of feet? shouldn't that be meters?

You'll be happier. Besides getting feet back, the gas is cheaper here.

PM or email me if you have the software and I can host it for "Offsite" backup only.

Dave Z.,
I have YARDS and my car was shipped from the factory or VPC with version 18 and we installed v18 on top of the exisitng software. The ACCEPT screen disappeared but YARDS appeared. If I have to see YARDS to get rid of the lawyer screen, that's fine with me. It's when we tried to install v18.2 that the ACCEPT came back. USA football is played in yards not feet!!
