ticking sound when turning

Hi all,

Hope you're enjoying Monday

Been driving about over the weekend and noticed when turning right with more than 1/3 lock there is a metallic ticking/clicking sound (that seems to be speed related coming from the left side of the car. I initially thought it was coming from drivers side but with all the windows open its defintely louder on the passenger side.
It only seems to happen when turning right and it only seems to happen when you've got more than 1/3 of lock.

Any thoughts?

Chris

Would you look at my post and see if these sounds the same as your problem please? The title is "ticking/creaking noise during

right turns"

Ticking/Creak Noise During Right Turns

There is the link..

Does that sound similar to your issue? If so maybe we can compare some notes and perhaps diagnose this faster.

Cheers

Hey mate,

I've read through your thread and it sounds like we have the exact same issue. Mine is definitely coming from outside the car so its not the seat or anything like that. This weekend, if I can, I'm going to try and get the car up and see how freely the wheels spin (easier said than done on London streets).
I'm thinking its wheel bearings to be honest, usually this is a kind of groaning sound - but from what I've read on this forum, on M5s this seems to start as the clicking noises we are experiencing. Be good to walk into a garage knowing whats up so they can just get on with fixing it. Keep me posted!

Cheers

Hi - I had a similar noise, but only when turning left at moderate speeds (nothing on slow turns or fast).
I applied some copper grease to the hub of the wheels - noise gone and hasn't returned in 50k miles. Tend to apply more grease between tyre replacements, so approx every 6 months.
cheers

Right time to close this thread now.. I had a fantastic day today.. I sent my car in to have this noise investigated.. and came out 21p better off!

The reason my car was making this noise was because a 20 pence and 1 pence had become jammed in the driver seat mechanism, which limited travel and also creaked when I went right. The coins have been mashed by the seat well and truly.

Some of you may remember a post that I put up asking about seat travel in the M5? And how I was struggling for leg room. Well you've guessed it, these coins were restricting the travel of the seat too! Guy at the garage pulled them out, regreased the seat rail, I can now go so far back I can't touch the pedals and there are no noises at all! I am delighted.

And to top off an already great day, the guy didn't charge me a penny!

If anyone wants a BMW Independent around Reading Hampshire UK pm me. He'll be doing most of my work while I am down here.

He did identify that I might need new pads and discs at the back soon and is currently pricing that up with OEM parts (not from a dealer). Hoping he'll get back to me. I am thinking of asking him to do the tranny and gearbox fluids at the same time.

All in all great day and problems all solved. Hope anyone with similar issues resolves theirs.

Cheers

Craig
