CLARIFICATION......

The 4 bulbs with the loops on them are for the doors. You will also get some 44mm bulbs and a 39mm bulbs for the glove box. Those are simple plug and play, no confusion. Here are some pictures I took today...

Door bulb. I took a pair of needle nose plier to bend the metal holder to this shape. To solder, I just heated up the metal on the bulb holder and ran the solder over the ring on the bulb to lock it in place. Very easy.

This is the 39mm bulb for the glove box. The 44mm ones will look just like this, but 5mm bigger. Those are for the interiorand the trunk lid....

The bulb in the trunk deck lid is the one giving me issues. It is a spade connector in Chris's and Brian's cars, not a 39mm like I have in my car. I need you guys to check your trunk and let me know what the deal is.

Mines a 2001, but my car is still at the body shop (2 Looooooong weeks so far) so I have no way of checking until I get it back. Hopefully tomorrow, but that's what I said yesterday, and friday, and thursday, and.....

RealOEM didn't show any P/N differences between the years, but it could be incorrect.

Any chance we can get a shot of the two types of housings and their bulbs?

I don't have the spade connector but jimmythefish posted pics of the spade type bulb. The other is just a 44mm bulb and housing.

Hey folks, chiming in here for this thread. Sorry its been a while.
Been busy with the my new beast.

Quick summary:
BMW uses different sizes and types of bulbs and I simply cant understand why. Thus we have to suffer searching for the brightest bulbs in different sizes and types.

My new 2006 M6 is no different.
Glove box bulb size is different from door lights bulb size and type.
Trunk light size is different too. WTF!!!!!!!!!!! This makes LED upgrades more difficult.

It should be simple plug and play.

Updates: I continue to experiment with LED's as I love LED's.

I have already upgraded my M6 to LED bulbs. See here:

Most E39 (also depends on the year) uses 39mm Festoon LEDs.
The 39mm festoon LED's will be plug and play for most interior light locations.

I have found some great 39mm superbright LED's in eBay. However, they are not built as well as LED's from Autolumination so I dont know how long my new ones will last.

I have also found some brighter bulbs for the overhead lights and they are plug and play. However it is more expensive.

Time to get back to work. I have long meetings again today.
Last night, meeting with customer lasted until 9:30 PM!
(I start work at 5:30 AM)

Thanks to Scott / LCF09 for informing me about this thread.

As Gherardini mentioned - if you like bright bulbs, almost no heat, last a long time, consumes much much less power - you will love LED's.

You all take care. I will try and help when I can.

^ Thanks for chiming in Dan.

Question: did you replace the maps/reading light bulbs to LEDs as well in your E39? Which bulb type do I need to buy from Autoluminations to replace these?

OT: Your M6 is looking good. We need to have another GTG soon; I want to check her out!

The map lights I had a difficult time finding a good LED bulb that fits and also bright enough. But due diligence always pays off.

See attached. I purchased this from autolumination.
Most (not all) E39 M5 uses 194 map light bulb.

This 194 LED is plug and play for map lights but you will need to enlarge the map light assembly hole.

No big deal. Get a step up drill bit from hardware store.
Click HERE. This is what I have and works great.

Attach to your power drill and increase the hole size of the map light bulb assembly and voila, this 194 LED bulb fits!
Defnitely much better map light than regular bulb.

Yes, GTG soon!

FYI, we are meeting at Bahama Breeze at South Center mall this Saturday morning at 9:15 AM. Then we will caravan to the BMW CCA Puget Sound Griots Garage Tech session event from there. Hope to see you there.

Dan

I got my car back finally, I checked my trunk, my trunk lid has a 39mm or 44m bulb (I didn't measure) and the bulb in the trunk below the window has a spade type bulb
