Please check this repair bill (WTF content)

Okay, I'm new to the game - usually do DIY repairs but now I'm in an apartment and this isnt practical. SES light comes on, hence I take it to some highly recommended guys here in Houston.

Does that repair look reasonable?

Full Inspection
Coolant Flush
Replace Thermostat
Replace both pre-cat o2 sensors
Reseal Bank 1 solenoid gaskets

$2300

Is this normal or expensive?

Seems high to me, but I never go to the dealer. I have a shop that specializes in BMW repair. Looks like some BS charges in there (i.e. one hour to test thermostat). I'm not a mechanic, but this seems like they are padding this bill...

Reseal Bank 1 solenoid gaskets

are you referring to the vanos O-ring seals.

that can be a good amount of work because you have to remove both vanos to get the timing right. that would require removal of entire plennum, both valve covers, and both vanos units. its not hard, but i can see it being time consuming, 2000 worth...not really.

what was the hourly rate at the shop, and how much did you pay in parts.

I didnt authorize the repair - I was expecting a phone call to run me through it first but they went ahead and did it anyway. I need to get the car through emissions so I can get the car titled and I did stress this on Friday so with that in mind they have fast tracked me, obviously their paperwork is behind their mechanics...

Yup, Vanos solenoid. The 'quote' (see the attachment) has it down for 2.8 hours. Apparently the thermostat is PITA job too - 1 hour testing, 4.5 hours of labour.

Am I correct in seeing 4.6 total hours of just diagnosis? The total cost of the thermostat is relatively high. Adding the cost of the flush and the actual work it comes to $774.15. I believe when I had this done it was close to $450.

I'm also seeing a 1 hr charge to clear your DME adaptation values. Fishy stuff. Causes the whole picture to be in doubt now.

Thanks, I need anecdotal and hard evidence (ie dealer charges) as ammo if this bill really is a little out of hand.

WOW.. If you did not authorize this, your bill just got a lot lower! It is my understanding they must have authorization, to avoid this very problem. Dealers can not just go to town on a car without permission to repair and then tell you how much you owe them.
Which dealer? If you don't want to say the name I understand. North side of town? East? Center? South? I can figure it out from there. When it comes time for work I want to be ready.

It wasn't a dealer.
