2000 model - what to do now I have it.

Picked up my new M5 (2000 model) the other day and have ordered/will fit the following over the next 2 weeks as time allows. Bearing in mind this is my daily drive what else would be a good idea to do?

New Engine oil (Castrol Edge 10w60)
New Engine oil filter
New G Box oil
New Diff oil
New Plugs
New Air filters (stock)
New Pollen filter
New oil seperation cans, feed and return pipes and seals going into Plenumb(spelling!)
Braided S/Steel brake lines and new Dot 5 fluid
Poly bushes front and back
New ribbed belts (both)
2 Day Detail to clean the body up.

Maybe fuel filter to...

Just want to get most things done so I can just drive and change the engine oil as needed for the next 12 months before doing a major service again.

Car seems to run great so I am assuming no Maf issues although my other toy is a SC Monaro (GTO) so cant really guage the performance very well TBH.

BTW - do stealers have paint touchup kits for Carbon black as Halfrauds and the like dont seem to list it?

Cheers

Rog.

You can test the MAFS to avoid the assuming part with the OBD secret menu (see the FAQ). Tischer (getbmwparts) sells touch up paint, so other dealers probably do as well.

Welcome aboard! Hope to see you at a SOE meet soon....

I would add all new CPS, O2's and MAFs to the list. Assuming it is mechanically fine inside, then the engine will be as sweet as it can be and it gives you a reference point for future maintenance.

People wax lyrical about gearbox oil but I'm not convinced. It will feel different for a week or so then go back to how it was.

Also, I am reliably informed that the poly bushes are not so good in the long run. Better to start with, but worse after a few miles. Depends on how often you fancy changing them I guess.

Have fun, and whatever you do don't make the same mistake as me and wait 4 years before you take her to the 'Ring. I thought I knew this car well, but I have just seen a whole new side to the already awesome abilities of the E39 M5. Until you've done some laps of the 'Ring you will only have discovered half of what this car can do. It defies the laws of physics.

Been to the ring quite a few times and this one will definately be going round!
Will chat to the dealers on Sat about the O2 and CPS as it seems to run fine for now. Read up on the MAF test, changing the oil this weekend so will try it after that as dont want to rag the engine on 8k old oil. TBH at £180 odd each Im not that bothered about them as any hiccups and tey will just get changed, all the chat Ive read seemed to give the impression you needed a mortgage for them.

WRT the Vanos, has anyone fitted the tighter tolerence drive wheels that Dr Vanos offers as the rattle on startup just annoys me - engineering background and all means I want it quiet all the time!

Welcome to the board Roger and congrats on your new car. Your list looks pretty sensible to me; there is a balancing act between good maintenance and needlessly changing parts in case something fails but your list looks fine.

On the subject of 02 sensors, I replaced mine at 150k miles. The car had always felt strong and then at around that mileage I felt a noticeable and quite sudden, but not desparately dramatic loss of power and urgency. Changed the pre-cat 02 sensors and it was back to normal. MAFs seem to last me about 60k miles but I've never had any go really bad on me. I've approached this car with the attitude that if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but if it is broken (or you know it's going to), get it fixed pronto.

One other possibility to consider is a KDS alignment for the suspension. I had mine done somewhere around 90,000 miles and it made a slight but positive difference to the feel of the car. Depends if it's at all out of line to start with...

Doesn't it just! I took the M5 to Cadwell Park a couple of weeks ago, (which in case you don't know it is a pretty narrow and wiggly circuit nicknamed the mini Nurburgring). I thought the car might have felt a bit big and heavy but it absolutely monstered the track. Poised, fast and easy to drive up to, at, and a touch over the limit. The brakes even coped ok, but there aren't any big straights so I didn't get over about 120mph or so. I had a bit of an overheating issue (think I know the cause) but other than that it was stunning. 163,000 miles, no special track preparation and it just flew. Almost due its inspection 2 as well so the plugs are about 50,000 miles old... Drove it 300 miles to work the next day. What a car.

No maybes about it! This should be up near the top of your list. An oft overlooked filter in this car that can rob performance and shorten the life of your fuel pump. Other members have bought new MAFs and done all kinds of other repairs only to find out the FF was the problem. Don't be one of them!

Also, I second the motion on at least the pre-cat O2 sensors if you've made it anywhere near 100k miles (or equal kilos). Bosch makes a perfect direct replacement.

Finally I have poly bushes for 6k miles on all 4 front control arms and front swaybar. No issues at all yet. The PowerFlex rear swaybar part may fit the OEM swaybar brackets, but if you go with the TCD (search it) upgrade you'll find they don't fit right. I returned mine when I couldn't fit it.

BTW...what kinda mileage on your car? In mi and km please.

I would flush out the coolant and check out the coolant system rubber parts as well

Cheers for the feedback guys. As for the FF I think I will add that to my order with Euro car parts. Ive hopefully got a H&S backbox setup on the way to liven up the very quiet exhaust.
Cheers for the feedback on the uprated ARB brackets not fitting the poly bushes as well as I was gonna order them! Will get new stock ones as they are peanuts anyhow.
Think my suspension is still very good although the car has done 112k miles, as I get used to it it does seem to corner amazingly flat for what initially seemed a big car... very suprising!

Any feedback on the revised Vanos drives as mines reasonably quiet when running but does sometime rattle like a deisel when you start it and I know I will get bored explaining to people that its not as bad as it sounds and alot of them do it!

Oh and I bit the bullet and ordered two new oil seperators and all the pipes today along with the rubber seals. Mine are very! soft and well past their sell by date IMHO - £60 but at least I will know they are good to go.
