I'm puzzled by your statement where you say (you)

Who did this inspection? A changed gear box is not something that would be readily apparent to an untrained observer.

SOP (Standard operating procedure) for buying a used BMW is to have a have a full 'pre purchase inspection' (PPI) conducted on the vehicle by a trusted independent BMW facility. Was this ever done? If not, I would recommend that you have it done before making any purchase decision.

PPI, do your due diligence. Get the history of the car, log book servicing, service records and the like, any invoices for work carried out.
If it adds up and checks out then feel better that you are entering into a great club.
The M5 is a great car, reliable as attested too by cars over 200000miles, and servicing is reasonable IMO.
Good luck

It doesn't actually cost that much to run the M5 as long as you do your research here, get a PPI, and pick up a clean vehicle. Of course, strange things do happen but, for the most part these are very solid reliable machines.

No particular problems with MY 2000. Key is the service history and PPI. All things being equal, a pedigreed 2000 will be a better value due to the market perception of this MY. I'd cash in on it!
