An oil question

we are having a debate as my 2001 M5 e39 is starting to show signs of buring oil under hard acceleration, its done 89k miles and has never shown the dreaded blue smoke before.....friends now say the mobil one oil I put in it is to blame, I think its a max of 40w, I should have used 10-60w edge oil from castrol which replaces RS....

Has this ever happened to anyone? and are they correct? Should I change my oil to the edge oil to prevent blue smoke....

Maybe you've developed an oil leak?

Blue smoke is unrelated to Mobil1 vs TWS - I'd get myself a compression test pretty darn quick.

I think minimum compression variation between cylinders is no more than 10% according to the BMW leakdown test procedure?

In any case, rule out the rings first by doing as Doug says.

Are you sure it's blue smoke? Mine smokes and use's a lot of oil if I drive her hard. My problem is a bit strange though, if I use the gears to slow down coming up to junction or roundabout then when I pull away I get a puff of smoke, if I don't use the gears then no smoke. My mechanic says it's something to do with the recirculation of the oil vapour into the air box via the oil seporators. BMW compression tested the engine and found no problem.
So if this sounds like your problem then don't get to worried. All M car smoke a bit even the new M3 does as I have seen a white one with black spec on the rear bumper.

Black = carbon = normal. Blue = unburned oil = bad. Oil consumption to some degree is normal, but oil out the tailpipe has always been, at least in my experience, an indicator of a problem.

Mr. Baker is spot on. How much are you burning? How much smoke are you seeing? In any case a compression leakdown is in order to properly diagnose oil burning. One thing to check first is to take the plenum cover off and see if there is an abundance of oil in the plenum, if so it may just be oil separator hoses or something simple. Always check the simplest things first. I doubt it is related to Mobil 1. I personally think people make a much bigger deal out of the oil choice thing, than needs to be made. I do however only run TWS in my beast.

Plenum? - - that would be that large black thing / cover over the entire intake //

...when you remove all those nuts holding it in place (without dropping any) you'll see these twisted horns in the plenum area. If this area is all full of oil, check the oil seperators - probably never changed. If just a light film of oil, well, this is normal over time...

what is the year/month build date for your car?

it needs TWS 10-60 if older than, what was it now, damn memory, uh, March 2000?

(don't worry, it's an oil thread, plenty to come with more answers than mine...)

oh, and my '99 burns a liter every 1000km, or 600ish miles - of course, I drive her like she's stolen (required)

- I love oil threads...
