I recently got this car and I am slowly working out all of the little niggles that need sorting out.
This ticking or creak noise is the latest thing on my hit list.
The car is a mid 2002 M5 UK car with 63k on the clock.
The ticking noise only occurs when going around a roundabout tightly (right turn in the UK), and seems to only occur when the car is making a turn to the right too. During sharp turns to the left you don't hear a peep out of it. It doesn't do it with the car stationary, I've tried bouncing it to see if it makes the noise then and it doesn't, or at least I'm not able to reproduce it there. It doesn't seem to do it during normal right turns either, plodding down the road etc, just tight right turns.
It's like tinny creaking ticking noise, not particularly loud either, but I can't quite figure out where it's actually coming from. It doesn't last long and doesn't do it every single time, it has to be a substantially tight turn for it to do it. Car temperature makes no difference to whether or not it makes the noise either.
When stationary the car can have the steering full lock left to full lock right and there isn't a sound out of it. It doesn't do it over bumps either.
I am pretty sure it's not my keys knocking on the steering column, I did at first think it could be that but I am convinced it's not.
I've done an extensive search on this forum, and the potentials seem to range drastically from steering joint, ball joints, shocks, mounts, wheel bearings, brakes. As I said I've tried bouncing, I've tried pushing and pulling the front wheels to the side, I can't seem to replicate it.
I am a but stuck as to what it could be, anyone got any good ideas or tests I've not thought of? If I can't replicate it I'll just wait till the MOT (fitness test for US) and see if they find anything.
