another tire thread - sumitomo HTR III owners, please step inside
need new rear tires. have conti sport contact 2's on there now and i'm not displeased with them except for the 10k i got out of the rear ones. but, i kind of expected that so no big deal. what does suck is the 331 bucks a piece tirerack wants for them. i'm cheap when it comes to tires.
so i'm looking at the HTR III's... i can get a set for 758 - that's front and rear. i know some of you are running them... so, thoughts? are they quiet-ish? how are they lasting? how's the grip with them?
I had soem type of Michelin's before...I think they were the sport a/s. These HTRZ3 are way quieter. They grip better than those. The big complaint I hear is wet traction...I don't drive it in bad weather...so I don't know, but I feel like they ride great. I also have heard of them flat spotting, but I haven't noticed. My old tires flat spotted quite a bit...but they were quite old.

The Sumitomos flat spot if they sit for about 10 hours. It goes away after 10 to 15 minutes, though.
They have great traction in the dry. In the wet? Well, I havent driven them aggressively in the wet. Who does, though? Now, if you mean emergency maneuvers in the wet, they did just fine with some testing I've done (as long as DSC is kept on).
Sumi's FTW. I've got 6K on mine and they are phenominal.
+1

That's what I did. All 4 Sumi's from TireRack.
I can't comment on the tires I had on there before (GY Eagle F1's). The rears were almost at the wear bars (causing a cabin vibration) and the fronts were cupped on inner and outer edges from bad bushings. Although I do have the F1's on my VW R32 and the wet traction on them is just unreal. Sidewalls are soft though...bad auto-x tire FWIW.
As for the Sumi's I have almost no complaints. Don't let any tire snobs here or elsewhere dissuade you. For the $ the Sumi's are a fantastic purchase. According to tests they do not have the best wet traction, but as was stated before who really drives at the limit in the rain? Assuming you're not a tailgater you'll have no worries.
My only beef so far is the temporary flatspotting. If the tires sit for too long you get a temporary slight wobble in the steering wheel for a couple miles until they heat up and regain their normal shape.

I have Sumi's now, after 2 sets of GS D3's. At the limit, the Goodyear is better, (feels like a stiffer sidewall-less flex) but it is pretty rare you reach the tires limits on the street!! I find the Sumi's round and quiet, and don't notice any flatspotting.
Unless you want a "name" tire, it is very cost effective tire that gives up nothing in normal everyday driving.

Jerry

Interesting. Maybe because you're in sunny FLA? I haven't noticed it lately now that its a bit warmer, but they were definately doing it when it was closer to winter. Maybe it has something to do with parking warm tires in the cold...they sorta "freeze" into position. As opposed to a warm tire that's parked in a warmer environment.

Very possible, that would make sense.
I also don't let the car sit for more than 3-4 days typically, so that might have something to do with it also. Big temp drops will also affect air pressure, which might exacerbate any flatspotting issues.

Jerry
