CPS/Vanos Bank 2 questions THANKS!!

Thank you for taking the time to read my problems. I have an 01 with 47K. I have had the car put away for the winter and wanted to get an oil change and new plugs.
Before I put the car away I had SES light. I pulled the code and saw a misfire at start up. I wasn't worried cuz the car was running good.

I stopped by mi Indie today to see what was going on and I have the following:

code 72 "Exhaust VANOS BANK 2" (33 times)
"CPS Exhaust BANK 1" (222 times)
"Camshaft BANK 1 synchronized to crank shaft" (209 times)
"E8 tank ventilation" (2 times)

I spent the last few hours reading through some very technical posts. It seems that the first step is replacing the CPS Exhaust BANK 1 Is there and DIY instructions? (I looked be couldn't find)

Could the CPS cause the "Camshaft synchronized to crank shaft" fault??
If not, what do I have to replace to fix that problem??

I also saw a few comments that the CPS could also throw the Exhaust VANOS BANK 2 code..is that possible?

"The E8 code" do I have to replace the carbon canister? Can this repair wait until I have more funds available?

thank you for your help, I want to have as much info as possible when I talk to my mechanic tomorrow.

I need a drink

When I got my CPS Exhaust code, I got a VANOS code also. I just don't remember exactly what.
Change both Exhaust, CPS and reset the codes and see if they come back.

For E8, check this thread.
The valve is located underneath the intake plenum.

I recently had very similar codes popping up on my car, but for my Bank 2. Replaced the exhaust CPS and they all disappeared. Can't say if the exhaust CPS on one bank can trip the VANOS on the opposite bank, but replacing the CPS did fix the cam/crank synchronization fault. The E8 code also hasn't popped up since the replacement.

J Irwan wrote a great thread on replacing the Bank 2 CPS (link below). Replacing Bank 1 is very similar, if not easier due to no heating hoses in the way. The exhaust CPS' are both located on the rear of the engine block in just about the same place on each side.

Whews...Finally replace CPS exhaust - Bank 2 (Cyl 5-8)

What bank did your codes come from? Bank 1 or Bank 2?

Larry,

I might be mistaken but I believe that the cps could be faulty on bank 2 without tripping a code as they wear out over time.

I forgot, but change both sides anyways. The passenger side is easier to reach from top of the engine after taking the cabin air filter assembly.

And the driver side, it was easier from underneath.

Mine pulled all the same codes you described! I replaced both exhaust cps, and the ses light went off on its own. Runs GREAT now. The exhaust cps werent hard, I did both in about 30 mins. the hardest part was getting the car in the air. My advice, replace both at the same time!
