This one is for the REAL E39 pro's. This one will seperate the man from the boy's on knowledge

What is not working...and what dit we do;
  • Turnsignal on soudn and sight INSIDE the car
  • Foglights and headlights signal on the clocks
  • PDC sound
  • Rear lights when driving backwards
  • Radio/Nav
  • Warning sounds (all of them)

What did we do so far
  • Checked all the fuses. In the back on the right. In the back on the right (where the big red wires are). In the glove compartment. They are all ok. Including the relais.
  • We replaced the light unit in the right corner, under the glove compartment, behind the carpet. No result.

Everything is messured. All other items work.

It all started when I conected my battery again. I didn't put it tight enough. The car wasn't starting. When I tightent the bolt. The car ran again but these Items don't work anymore.

Sounds like you need to disconnect the battery and reset (short + and -) for 30 mins to reset the different controllers around the car. The electrical noise resulting from having a loose battery connection while attempting to start the car can write garbage to microprocessor registers etc. After a reset, connect the battery again (tighten the connector this time!) and let us know if the errors are gone.

It might be time to replace your battery. If your battery is getting past it's best, it can do all sorts of things to the M5s electronics, including what you describe. If your battery is the original, get a new one (got mine on the internet for about £70), hook it up and order will hopefully be restored.

Forgot to add that it might take a bit of time once the battery is replaced before everything wakes up. You might need to drive around for a while and stop / start the car a few times.

The NAV / audio is easily damaged and it sometimes takes time for it to wake up once the full voltage (ie. a new battery) is restored so I reckon there must be some sort of protection circuit which waits a while once sufficient voltage is restored before turning everything on again. The electronics do have a low-voltage cutoff; if the car thinks the battery voltage is too low to start the car it will not even try.

Danish is on the money i believe. I had to reset my car by unplugging and leave it off to get DSC working after draining the battery by accident..

I hope he is (cheaper than a new battery). Hopefully a reset will return things to normal. I seem to be lucky in that my M5 never seems to go wrong, but when my battery was past it I got most of the symptoms Kleintje was getting.

I was like my TV, Nav, stereo don't work, PDC keeps going with the ignition turned off, interior indicators don't work. I thought after many years of faithful service my dear M5 had decided it was time to break, and it was going to break properly. Then magically everything was fine for a day. Then it happened again, so knowing the battery was old I changed it and since then (four-five months ago) things have been fine, thankfully. It was incredible just how much a bit of low voltage funked my car up.
