          Question about checking oil level

          Guys,
I'm sure this topic has been covered many times before but a serach did not come up with a definitive answer.

The other day I started the engine cold, waited 1 minute, shut it off, waited 1 minute, and checked the oil. It was 1/8 inch above the add mark. Today after getting home, with the engine completely warm, I waited 1-2 minutes and checked the oil. It was at the 1/2 quart low mark. Which reading is more correct? Has anyone just added 1/2 quart at a time to keep it near the full mark? I have read to NOT over fill it.

PS: I've got a 9/01 build 2002 model. The oil was topped off at 1800 miles by the dealer. It now has 4600 miles so I've gone nearly 3000 miles with out needing to add oil.

Always check with the engine warm. Shut it off, wait one minute, check. I'm guessing you're very low, or very lucky. M5's burn about 1 qt per 1000 miles, especially when new - some a little more, some a little less.

The reason the oil needs to be measured this way is that it can pool in places from which it will not drain into the crankcase, except very slowly. The M5 engine even has scavenge pumps to collect oil from these areas so that the engine won't be starved under hard cornering.

Thanx Greg for the reply. I must be in good shape since I checked it warm this evening and let it sit for 2 minutes. The engine did use almost a quart in the first 1800 miles but hopefully the 2002 models use a bit less once broken in. 1/2 quart in 2500 miles isn't bad. Besides, I've haven't had much opportunity to run the car hard. I bet that makes a BIG difference in oil consumption.
