Oh yes. Correct. But I was thinking more along the lines of the plastic fan weakening over time regardless of it being used with a properly functioning fan clutch. Let's call it "plastic fatigue."
Bottom line is once one blade cracks off the fan is so out of balance that it instantly disintegrates. I'd opt for a metal version of this fan if it were an option.

I don't think anyone makes a metal one, but the plastic replacement is around $50-65.

Future - F10 M5 with manual transmission?

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

Update... The total parts to be replaced... Radiator, upper radiator hoses, fan, fan clutch, water pump, belt... The fan exploding directly affected the radiator, the hoses as well as obviously the fan and fan clutch.

For what it is worth my Indy noticed a slight wobble in the water pump pulley. Not that it was the reason for the fan exploding but he did work on a 5 liter mustang in the past that repeatedly had fans explode. After about 3 or 4 fan replacements he found the source to be a bent shaft on the water pump pulley.

Anyway the cost of the replacement parts and labor is....$2,100.

I love this car... or at least thats what I tell myself. I will post again on this point.

Sorry to hear that. This could be a DIY job if you're up for it. Could you breakdown the costs if possible?

Thanks and good luck,
Jim
