Update on M5 Purchase-discount

I posted a little while back saying that I was trying to get a
discount on 2002 M5 in Toronto area, and I did get a lot of
help from the members, which I thank you guys a lot for. I am
very close on cutting a deal at 4% discount, its just a matter of
playing the game right to the end.
The question that I have is that it seems like a lot of members
moved up from 540/6 to an M5. Now, BMW Canada just dropped
a lease rate to %3.5 on the 5 series, and still %7.95 to lease an M5. I can get 540/6 at even better discount than an M5, which
makes the difference between those 2 cars very substantial.
With the available M-Technics package on the 540 makes it even
harder. I am not tight for money, but I also know that you get
use to the power your car produces almost immediatley, and I
was wondering if an M5 is worth an extra 15k in interest alone
over 36 months lease.Guys, whoever went from 540 to an M5,
what was your motivation? I am just looking for an opinion that
I can relate to..

TIA

Eugene

value wise... the 540/6 is much better IMO. If money was an issue (between the two cars), then 540/6 would be the way to go.

However, I got the M5 for exclusiveness and the fact that it performs better than the 540/6.

I think the M5 is so different with the ride, power and seats than the 540i that they really aren't comparable. If the issue is money get the 540i.

Eugene-

I meean this in the most carefully measured way..... Its obvious you haven;t test driven the M5 yet. I will tell you.... the second you step inside one, and hit the gas or step hard on those brakes, or try to slide that car on a corner....or even just cruise slowly in the car..... The difference in price between that and the 540 seems to become insignificant.

You can't put a value on that smile or that comfort you have knowing you are driving BMW's automotive excellence. BMW knows this as well.....everything that is good about BMW is expressed in this car.

Your biggest problem should really be which color to buy.... and I am sure Sean and Max have ONE suggestion!

good luck with your color choice!!

Eugene,
I have to agree with Alfred. I've owned a 95 M3, 2 540iA's (98&99) and now have a 01 540i 6-speed (02 M5 on the way). As much as I've loved all the bimmers, the one that "moved" me the most was the M3. There really is something special about the M cars. This effect is even more magnified in the M5. I've test driven 3 of them and they spoil you terribly with the free and easy availability of brutal, neck wrenching power when you want it. The nice thing is that when you want civilized manners around town, it can provide that too! The 540i/6 has more than enough power; but then again, when do we ever get enough!?

I have a '98 540/6 and '00 M5.

I have the M5's suspension and brakes on the 540 since I've Dinan stg.III and AP brakes on the M.
I still love my 540 but...

My opinion: The only way to go wrong with buying a 540/6 is when one can afford an M5 and goes for the 540 instead.

Something not to overlook: The M5 has much quicker throttle response and higher ratio steering than 540.

Thanks for your help, guys. Actually, I did drive an M5 but didn't
drive a 540. One thing you made me realize- I could afford M5
without any stretches, therefore I would probably eat myself
alive about week after I pick up a 540. Hmm, so I guess titanium
silver over black luxury it is.....

Order the Beast!!!!

I had a 540i before purchasing my 2001 Carbon Black M5, it's worth every dollar. If you can afford it, I would get the M5. Enough said.

Eugene,

I faced the same question you had. The consideration then was not cost differential, but the fact that the Bay Area BMW dealers did not have an M5 to sell. They urged me to drive all the variants of the 5 series, just in case I was sufficiently satisfied with any $/vroom combination, then they'd had a sale. I never found that acceptable combination.

I ended up buying an used M5 in April 2001 in LA, without a test drive. Best decision I've ever made in my life.

M5= :pop:

Any other 5 series=

Gotta love these smileys.

Let me tell you as a proud owner of a 540/6, get the M5! The 540/6 is awesome but it is no where near a M5. I did not realize the huge difference in performace until I met up with a couple of M5s on the highway. Let me tell you... the M5s walked me with ease, floored all the way through 3rd, 4th, and they still left me very easily. You will regret the decision not to get the M5. It is better built, more luxurious, rarer (except in Boston), and faster. Both cars are great but spend the extra money and get the M5. Good luck and let us know how you make out.
