OT: New 7 experience... funny and sad

I dropped the wife off at the local BMW dealer yesterday to pick up her car from service. While I was there I decided to take a peek at the new 7.

My comments on the car pretty much echo what everyone else here is saying (19" wheels = good, look is growing on me), but there was one crucial difference. The 745 was parked in the lot as it had just come back from a test drive. This part of the lot is used for demo parking and customer parking. As I was looking at the front of the 7 (squinting to see if that made a difference) a car pulled into the space next to it....

... A Buick Rendezvous in nearly the same color. I know that we joke about the two cars being cut from the same cloth, but you have to see them side by side to truly appreciate the irony. Whoever designed the front end of the Buick must have worked on the 7

It used to be that nothing looked like a BMW and a BMW looked like nothing else. The one time that BMW crossed over into the mainstream they hit a white elephant!

Besides the resemblance to the eye-brows, I don't find any similarities. Would you be more specific?

Hi,

As a european i´m not familiar with the Buick Rendezvous, so looked around the net and found this. Maybe i´m WAY wrong.

The only thing I think both of the car have in commen, is the way the headlights seem to be to far apart, can´t find anything else.

Is this the car you are talking about?:

I agree that the new 7 is a bit of a departure for BMW design but I dont see the resembelence to the Buick Rendezvous.

I just know what drew me to BMWs design was very much form following function with minimal overhang and no silly styling gimmics. Now we get rings around the headlights (yes, I like them, but if Mitsubishi had done this, wed all be laughing and calling it a gimmick)

To me the new 7 is part of the new wave of auto design that is buliker, more heavy handed, and just plain bigger. Lexus is doing this- MB will be doing it at some point- all the SUVs get bigger. Personally, I dont like the trend at all. there is no elegance to these designs. As much as I am impressed with the new technology in the 7, the design just leaves me feeling a bit bewildered. There are days when I like it and days when I dont at all. maybe I will warm up to it on a full time basis- but I have a hard time believeing it.
