Had my car inspected by a friend in Vista the other day.
A bunch of things were on our list... until we stumbled upon this...
Not expensive after all, but looks like a bomb's about to blow right under my seat.
Did any of you, guys, have this sort of experience?
Mind it, I'm a moderate driver with occasioal outbursts of anger, so this must be a legacy from a previous owner.

I had one of these going bad on my 3 series a couple years ago. It can take out the exhaust system I was told if it brakes. May do damage to the drivershaft. I had a strong vibration in the vehicle at certain RPMs

Search for the word guibo. Pretty sure that's what it's called 'round here. They break here and there.

If you want your oil pan repaired (see http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39...rain-plug.html) instead of buying a new one or attempting the repair yourself PM me and we'll work something out. Thinking $60 profit is worth it. You pay all shipping of course. At the moment I have four remaining Timesert inserts looking for homes. If the demand is there I'll keep doing them. If not the tool goes on eBay minus one insert.

You're right. It is a guibo and sells for ~ $140. But it's a pain in the a** to replace it as the whole exhaust has to come off.
I have similar symptoms: light vibration on steering wheel after 70-72 mph (although it can be smth else).
Well, hope it'll last another 30 miles, just enough to get to the shop.
Having it replaced today, together with control arm bushings and sway bar links

Search around on the site. I am pretty positive I read a post where someone replaced it with the exhaust in place. My memories fading, but am 99% sure I read it on this site.

It is a guibo indeed, and I replaced mine about a yr or two ago, looked worse than yours! I don't think they had to take off the exahaust though, which for me was great as it took some time the first time (and then post headers) to get it to fit perfecty symmetric...

to get access to the bolts you need to remove the crossmember supporting the trans. the problem is the exhaust heatshield is barley overlapping this, so to do the job right you have to take the exhaust off, then take the heat shield off to get full clearance to take the crossmember off (while supporting your trans). now if you want to bend your heat shield, it is possible to leave your exhaust in place.
