Oh no, I am too late! All you needed to do was turn on the factory antenna amplifier. I read thru the whole post and did not see anybody mention anything about the amplified antenna turn on lead. ( if I missed then forgive me ) The E39 has an amplified antenna. The radio is actually in the trunk, the front "NAV radio" is just a faceplate, that is why the antenna lead was in the trunk. When you unplugged the radio harness in the trunk it removed the turn on signal for the amplified antenna. In the rear radio harness ( not the amp harness ) near where you found the antenna, there should be a white wire leading up to the left rear C pillar radio module. Check this white wire that I highlighted to see if it has 12 volts when your radio is in tuner mode. If it does not have +12v then that was cause of the poor radio reception.
(Never mind the photo. I have not posted in a long time, and it is not letting me include the photo of the turn on wire. It is the white wire going into the bottom of the amplifier in the left rear C pillar, with a beige connector.)
And if it doesnt have power in tuner mode, how do you turn on that power?
MKIV, Sirius Retrofit, BlueTooth Retro-Fit, E60 SSK, ACS Aluminum Pedals, 30% Window Tint, TEC CupHolder, 2X's Ultimate Cup Holders, Full LED upgrade (Thanks Timmay77), "M" Stitched Alcantara Shiftboot and E-Brake boot, CF Steering wheel trim (Thanks CGRM5), Euro-Dash (Thanks Raz and Timmay77), Hella TC-400 TPMS, Scosche BlueTooth 2.0 A2DP Adapter (Thanks btmlinedan) Euro "Safety kit" Fire Extinguisher and First Aid box (Thanks Slimmbones)
Dinan Exhaust cans (Thanks Timmay77 and btmlinedan), Brake duct mod with "Black Chrome" custom rings (Thanks Timmay77 and Diny), Dinan RSB with BeastPower brackets (Thanks Firehire, MFreakin5 and btmlinedan), Stoptech slotted rotors with StopTech Street Performance Brake Pads (Thanks Zeckhausen Racing Timmay77 and Lunker325)
Glad to hear it was not too late. ( I had to use an old handle to send you the tip while I waited for my account to activate ) The safe way to do it would be to unplug the lead from the antenna booster and test continuity with your DMM to the antenna turn on lead in the rear radio harness before connecting it to your remote turn on wire. That way you can be sure you got the right wire.
hey timmay do you still have the cardboard cut out for the front speakers?
I do not, unfortunately, I may be taking my door panels off to check some things, I can make a new one. Peter may still have the one I sent him. PM Herrubermensch......

Does your old factory amp still work? Would you be willing to sell it? ( I know of a M5 forum member that is having issues with their amp and they would appreciate a chance to get an inexpensive replacement if available ).

Received my Alpine rear view camera yesterday, started install last night. I am so far behind schedule on getting this whole rebuild complete!! I also stopped by Home Depot and picked up all of the liquid fiberglass, fiberglass cloth, and various supplies needed to build the sub enclosure. Should get a good amount of work done next week.
