I am in the process of tearing out EVERYTHING from my 01 M5 and putting a complete aftermarket system in. I will update this thread as things progress. Let's start with the parts list of the new stuff...

Alpine IVA-W505 - 7" 2 din multimedia station
Alpine NVE-P1 - removable navigation drive (no vss needed)
Alpine PXA-H100 - Imprint module
Alpine DHA-S680 - DVD/CD Changer
Alpine SPX-17REF - 6.5" component set
Alpine SPS-500 - 5.25" co-axial rear fill

Memphis Audio 16-MCD1000 - 1100x1 @ 1 ohm sub amp
Memphis Audio 16-MCA2004 - 4 channel amp

Mounting kit for deck from Ebay
eBay Motors: BMW 5 series E39 double din bezel &complete install-kit (item 360119388261 end time Jan-04-09 12:07:28 PST)=

Now for some pictures....

Hole in dash where the Nav monitor used to be.....

Rear deck removed, speaker for the PDC. (Thanks DouglasABaker)

Subwoofer location. These are actually mounted from the bottom, but the screws have to be removed from the top.

GPS antenna (I think) on drivers side under the rear deck

Radio antenna (I think) in the drivers side rear pillar

Driver's side rear speaker loaction

Passenger's side rear speaker pod. Much larger than I thought they would be.

Trunk after my DSP Amp, Radio module, and CD changer were removed.

Wiring harness where I am going to tap into the speaker wires.

I can't IMAGINE what it would be like owning this car without the help from people like you Doug.

I tip my hat to you gentlemen....... I wish you could all attend the Timmayfest in May so I could buy you a beer.

#304 ·
Always happy to help :) Might as well share a bit of knowledge when you can, right? I'm officially putting you in charge of all stereo related threads from now on though!

I'd love to join for Timmayfest, but a consultants travel schedule and 3 daughters under 5 years old precludes me from doing things like that on weekends, unfortunately. You guys have a terrific time and have a couple for me :)

I guess I haven't updated this in a while.

Here is what my trunk currently looks like......

I added some blue LED's for effect.....

I will be re doing my front stage this winter (thank Peter!) and go with an active 3 way set up. I am also changing out my processor for a better one.

The new equipment:
-Alpine PXA-H701
-Hybrid Audio Technologies L1, L3, L8 speaker sets
-Adding an Alpine PDX-5 to power the additional speakers
Alpine PXA-H701

HAT L3's to be mounted in custom A pillar pods that will be covered with the OEM Alcantara Suede

HAT L8's for the doors in custom built baffles.

Thanks Rich, I think Doug still holds the "Master" ranking when it comes to M5 audio. I'm am working my way up the audio "jedi" ranks. LOL. Peter even taught me a few things during my trip to VA for his install. I am just amazed by the amount of knowledge and talent on this board. We can learn so much from each other! Peter really influenced my new front stage project with his car. IT SOUNDS AMAZING! Yes, I am a copy cat. *sticks tongue out*

Wow, looks great.

I demand more install pictures!

#318 ·
Not really, I'm just a junkie for install pics :biggrinbounce:

Does your new setup cause drone? (sorry HAD to ask) hahaha :hihi:

#316 ·
You guys are killing me......

I will however take pics of the new install since it will incorporate some custom building. I am going to try my hand at fiber glassing the L3's into the A pillars, modifying the door cards to accept the L8's (still waiting on pictures from Peter, haha!), and some custom brackets to mount the amps. Should be interesting.

Damn , how did I miss this thread...

But Tim I must applaud you for this effort. Great works.
I used to be an Audiophile my self and setup my own car, but I think that novelty worn out when I own my beast.
Perhaps it's because I just don't have enough spare time like I used to anymore.

The install looks great, and believe or not I just finished reading all 32 pages of this thread. (That's right I just came across this thread just now.)
I love what you did, the final install looks awesome and it definitely pass all my category:
1. Retain most of the trunk space
2. Clean install
3. Stealth look.
4. Last but not the least, good sound :)

By the way I can't help but wondering what did you did with the fiberglass sub enclosure ?

And if you ever think about switching the speakers you should look into DLS Audio, I think you'll be very please.
For the longest time I have been a big fan of old schoolsl a/d/s (pre 2000) speakers, Morel Audio, and early DynAudio.
But DLS definitely impressed me the first time I heard it (probably about 8 years ago).

Regardz,

J Irwan

Thank you J......

I am using the fiberglass enclosure for my subs, they fire down into the enclosure. I have them running reverse polarity because I didn't want to take up any space in the enclosure with the speaker basket. The plastic "///M5" barrier is just that, a barrier directing the sound into the car instead of the trunk. I will take additional pictures tomorrow to show more of how it is set up.

I will be replacing my whole front stage with the Hybrid Audio Technologies L1, L3, L8 set up. herrubermensch go me hooked on the HAT speakers after hearing his car. I WAS happy with my car. (Damn you Peter!) Thank you for the information, I will look into those manufacturers for future upgrades or other installs!

Hey Tim, what abilities did you lose when removing the OEM nav?

#321 ·
Every function in the OBC. Everything you control from the OEM HU is gone. Even the screen in the gauge pod does not show the time, or MPG's stuff like that. It does show the temp though. I'm not even sure what all I miss because I never drove the car with the stock HU in it. I tore it out as soon as I bought the car.

#329 ·
Sooooooooo.......

If I hook up an MK 2, I will be able to use the functions that were avaiable on it when it was diconnected from the previous car on my gauge cluster without the 16:9. Right? Since you can reset everything from the turn signal? I just won't be able to set my time.....

steering wheel control

hi, since you went thru the change, i am guessing you wanted to keep the streeing wheel control active and interfaced with the aftermarket stereo! what did you use?
i personally installed an aftermarket and lost all the control and cant use it at all.
most websites have an interface with well-known aftermarket stereos but i am affraid since my stereo does not carry any name on it since it is from china. i have a double-din 7inch. your help is highly appriciated and if kindly give me the link as to where i can buy it

cheers

Thanks timmay for all the info. I'm finally done with it in my 01 touring. Its was such a great experience all together. I went with a less complex setup and it works for me (for now). Now I will just source out a set of component speakers with three speaker set for the fronts. The rear could probably wait. Any idea on what to get? I tossed the Rockford Fosgate 4-channel amp because it was causing alternator whine sound (replaced with an Alpine amp and now it has zero noise). I did check the grounding at least 20 times but the culprit was the Fosgate amp (old and beaten). Let me know what speakers offer a 3-piece component set.

Looks like it connects to a level sensor of some sort, attached to the passenger side suspension arm.

Well, I now have all of the OBC functions again. I have an MK2 hooked up in the trunk and used a 4:3 HU to set my time, date and reset all of the other info. My MPG's work, distance, everything with JUST the MK2 hooked up. I removed the 4:3 HU after resetting everything.

Thanks Doug.
