I am in the process of tearing out EVERYTHING from my 01 M5 and putting a complete aftermarket system in. I will update this thread as things progress. Let's start with the parts list of the new stuff...

Alpine IVA-W505 - 7" 2 din multimedia station
Alpine NVE-P1 - removable navigation drive (no vss needed)
Alpine PXA-H100 - Imprint module
Alpine DHA-S680 - DVD/CD Changer
Alpine SPX-17REF - 6.5" component set
Alpine SPS-500 - 5.25" co-axial rear fill
Alpine SWR-1242D (2) - 12" DVC 4 ohm subwoofer
Memphis Audio 16-MCD1000 - 1100x1 @ 1 ohm sub amp
Memphis Audio 16-MCA2004 - 4 channel amp

Pac TR7 - Video bypass module (illegal I know, I don't want to hear it :byee55amg)
PAC SWI-JACK - steering wheel control module

Mounting kit for deck from Ebay
eBay Motors: BMW 5 series E39 double din bezel &complete install-kit (item 360119388261 end time Jan-04-09 12:07:28 PST)=

Now for some pictures....

Hole in dash where the Nav monitor used to be.....

Rear deck removed, speaker for the PDC. (Thanks DouglasABaker)

Subwoofer location. These are actually mounted from the bottom, but the screws have to be removed from the top.

GPS antenna (I think) on drivers side under the rear deck

Radio antenna (I think) in the drivers side rear pillar

Driver's side rear speaker loaction

Passenger's side rear speaker pod. Much larger than I thought they would be.

Trunk after my DSP Amp, Radio module, and CD changer were removed.

Wiring harness where I am going to tap into the speaker wires.

Wow, Tim! How do you find the time to sleep and eat with all these mods and projects?
Love your sick stereo build!:imnotworthy::imnotworthy::imnotworthy:

I'm already tired of the stock Navi but my stereo install experience is limited to just installing a HU and amp from my previous cars.

I don't sleep much......LOL..... I'm serious though...... NO SLEEP.

The install was WAY worse than I originally figured, but thanks to MANY people on this board, it was a success. Now I am just going to tweek it a bit, and open my trunk up a bit so I can fit a full sized 18x9.5 rear in it for my long hauls.

Thanks David!!

Started the process last night. Does anyone know what is in the 3rd picture? I don't think that's the fuel pump.... What is under that area of the trunk? Gas tank? Last picture gives you an idea of things to come....

Did you ever figure out what these wires were for?

My guess would be those are the wires for the fuel pump and gas gauge, so the gas tank is most likely right underneath

The gas tank and fuel pump are under the rear seat. But I can't tell you exactly what lies under the area of the trunk you specified, Tim. After this weekend, I will let you know, as somewhere in the left hand side of the area you specified is where I am cutting out a hole to run my methanol line and methanol tank vent line.

The only other thing I can think of is the rear brake pad sensor, which runs to the passenger side rear brake. How many wires is it?

Glad to hear it was not too late. ( I had to use an old handle to send you the tip while I waited for my account to activate ) The safe way to do it would be to unplug the lead from the antenna booster and test continuity with your DMM to the antenna turn on lead in the rear radio harness before connecting it to your remote turn on wire. That way you can be sure you got the right wire.:M5thumbs:

Does your old factory amp still work? Would you be willing to sell it? ( I know of a M5 forum member that is having issues with their amp and they would appreciate a chance to get an inexpensive replacement if available ).

Received my Alpine rear view camera yesterday, started install last night. I am so far behind schedule on getting this whole rebuild complete!! I also stopped by Home Depot and picked up all of the liquid fiberglass, fiberglass cloth, and various supplies needed to build the sub enclosure. Should get a good amount of work done next week.

Will update with pictures soon.

Camera installed and works perfect.....

I popped out the driver's side license plate light to see if there was a void to run the wiring. You betcha!

I then tore apart the trunk lid coverings to expose the skeleton. What a pain.....

After running a rather LARGE connector through the 3 grommets to get it to the trunk, and drilling a rather LARGE hole in my deck lid to run the camera wiring through, it is all mounted up and works great.....

Forgive my oober messy garage....

I will HOPEFULLY do my first layer of fiberglass on the sub enclosure tonight.....

Kinda sad your camera didnt take a shot of "THE" bucket.

Hahaha jealous of this. I want to do this OEM style so bad but ZOMG its $$$

First layer of fiberglass is done.....

I laid down some plastic to protect the car and help form the bottom of the box, then lined it with cheese cloth which bonds with the resin to form a stronger wall.

I used 2 full containers of resin on this first layer. I will use 3 tomorrow.

After first layer....

Tonight, I will lay down another layer of cheese cloth and seal up any gaps with some "Great Stuff" expanding foam and some silicone. I'll then mix up the 3 new containers of resign and finish out the fiberglassing.

Part of the enclosure. I should have the sub enclosure finished by Fri afternoon, it will all make sense then.

Looks good. Hope you did the math to make sure the cu. ft inside is of the correct size

excited to see how this all turns out
1.95 cu. ft. Optimum sealed volume for each woofer is 1 cu. ft. Since I am running the woofers in reverse phase and mounting them inverted, I do not need to subtract the displacement for the basket/magnet. I actually should add a smidge for the extra space for the cone curvature. 1.95 should work perfect.

I would think if I have the knowledge to replace the ENTIRE OEM system with an aftermarket set up, and have the knowledge to use fiberglass resin to make a sub box, I would be sure to do the correct math to figure out cubic foot of a sealed enclosure....... I am guessing you haven't read the rest of the thread?

Thanks though.

Sub box is completed.....

Here are some pictures of it removed from the car, and my trunk floor AFTER I built the box.....

This is what my trunk looks like now, still a wiring nightmare, but will be all cleaned up when I get things situated the way I want and the trim panels built.

Notice the big empty space in the middle of the eq rack? I have to send my DQXS back to Audio Control to be reprogrammed again...... When it was in for service last time, they programmed it with the software for the DQL-8. Oops. thanks for the contact again Peter, Eric was very apologetic about the whole thing. No big deal.....

Mids and Highs sound great, the subs sound like crap. Once I get the rear baffle/wall built and mounted, it should give the subs some more back pressure so I can turn up the gains a little, get a bit more punch out of them. I'm just not getting the deep kick drum bass I was getting before, even though this enclosure has over .5 more cubic foot of volume. We shall see.....

Where are you putting the rear baffle? in between the subs and the amp rack?

Are those 15"? they look damn big lol

TIMMAY a question from the start of your audio setup, when you cut evrything to get the head unit back plate in,did cutting all the plastic affect the heating blower system that much as i see alot was cut out...dan

Dan,

I don't drive my car in the winter, so I have no clue if it TRULY affected the airflow. I use the AC in the summer, and it keeps us nice and cool. I don't THINK it affected the air flow much, but I'm sure it did some. The rear vents still get plenty of air flow. That is how I judged the amount of flow I have.....

If there is anything I can do to help in aid you with your install let me know. Feel free to message me anytime!!
