I am in the process of tearing out EVERYTHING from my 01 M5 and putting a complete aftermarket system in. I will update this thread as things progress. Let's start with the parts list of the new stuff...

Alpine IVA-W505 - 7" 2 din multimedia station
Alpine NVE-P1 - removable navigation drive (no vss needed)
Alpine PXA-H100 - Imprint module
Alpine DHA-S680 - DVD/CD Changer
Alpine SPX-17REF - 6.5" component set
Alpine SPS-500 - 5.25" co-axial rear fill
Alpine SWR-1242D (2) - 12" DVC 4 ohm subwoofer
Memphis Audio 16-MCD1000 - 1100x1 @ 1 ohm sub amp
Memphis Audio 16-MCA2004 - 4 channel amp

Pac TR7 - Video bypass module (illegal I know, I don't want to hear it :byee55amg)
PAC SWI-JACK - steering wheel control module

Mounting kit for deck from Ebay
eBay Motors: BMW 5 series E39 double din bezel &complete install-kit (item 360119388261 end time Jan-04-09 12:07:28 PST)=

Now for some pictures....

Hole in dash where the Nav monitor used to be.....

Rear deck removed, speaker for the PDC. (Thanks DouglasABaker)

Subwoofer location. These are actually mounted from the bottom, but the screws have to be removed from the top.

GPS antenna (I think) on drivers side under the rear deck

Radio antenna (I think) in the drivers side rear pillar

Driver's side rear speaker loaction

Passenger's side rear speaker pod. Much larger than I thought they would be.

Trunk after my DSP Amp, Radio module, and CD changer were removed.

Wiring harness where I am going to tap into the speaker wires.

Im not sure if you guys have a ski pass through, or even a punchout for the ski pass through, but i'd like to report that cutting a hole passing into the cabin makes a WORLDS difference in output. BMW trunks are sealed wayyy to well to let sound pass through. Unless you have a IB install this would not pertain.

timmy does indeed have the ski pass through

Pics of the pass through? page 4 (of 8), all the thread pics are mostly earlier on.

Progress on the new amp rack....

Alpine PDX-4.150
Alpine PDX-5
Alpine PXA-H701 processor

This rack will go on the driver side of the trunk in the stock DSP amp location. I am currently working on a second rack that will hold my Memphis 1000d sub amp and my Alpine HD Radio module that will go on the passenger side of the trunk.

No. LOL. Why would I want to know the BAD news? (2) 30lb woofers, probably a 40lb sub box, (3) amps, (2) 15lb 8" mid-woofers, etc........

Weight has absolutely no bearing for me on this car. I like going fast, but am not a speed freak. I just satisfy myself by knowing I cut about 100lbs off by doing the muffler delete......

Peter just confirmed with me that the baffles he is currently using are almost identical to the ones I have. Thank you for the help fellas! I am worrying about nothing it seems..... Silly me! LOL.

#382 ·
Are these "Pener baffles" or something else?

#385 ·
^^^ They should! Thanks to you, my stereo will rock even MORE than before!

I made some good headway today. Fabbed up my power distribution panel, covered it, and laid out some of my blocks. I am waiting for my wire to show up, then should be able to get my amps installed. I also realized I still have a TON of work to do! I spent 4 hours on it today and felt like I just barely got anything done! I still have no clue where I am going to mount the MKII unit so I have my OBC functions. I have to find someplace to stash it in the trunk!

#387 ·
The Nav does not hold the OBC info, but it enables display of it and contains the user interface to reset MPG etc. Without either the Nav or a TV module nothing will be displayed on the monitor and you'll have no way to setup what's displayed on the cluster or reset values. At this can be done with a PC connected to the iBus or just leaving a place to temporarily connect up a MID or the Nav computer for when you want to change stuff - assuming you're not using the stock monitor for anything else.

#389 ·
You can still scroll through the OBC info on the instrument cluster with the NAV unit disconnected, but like RichardP says, you cant make any changes to it, and it wont be displayed on the monitor.

Timmy! Great job man!

I just read through this ENTIRE thread...wow...what an awesome project and a wealth of great information on a complicated project. You, and all involved get two thumbs up...and Doug holy smokes you know your stuff!

Do you have install pics, information, and fabrication details on the final trunk trim with the "M5 etched plexiglass window" project and the lighting too? Sorry if I missed the details on that...really looks nice.

When you get a chance, post more pics of the trunk setup. :hihi:

Also, how does iPod integration look and work with your setup?

#396 ·
Sorry brother, just read this post.....

I am sort of revamping the trunk set up now. I will post the final install pics when I am done! I will add a few build pics too.

Ipod/Iphone integration is flawless with the Alpine unit. I love it. Right now I have the connection in the glove box. I hook up the ipod, toss it in the glove box and forget it. All of the controls are made from the deck. Video, audio, album covers, everything.

Did this tonight... AHHHHH! Talk about nerve racking. I was more nervous about this than doing the HU install for some reason! WOW.

This will be the the speaker grill. I will make it out of 1/8" MDF and the grill cloth herrubermensch donated. Thanks Peter.....

Cut them off with a Dremel?

#403 ·
Cut what off? The door cards? The piece I removed was held on with plastic rivets for the most part. I also had to cut away some of the wood with yes, a dremmel. It wasn't too terribly bad, just nerve racking....
