very random q...

what's auto detailing? I've always thought it meant putting extra lines/marks on the sides of the car, but it seems that you guys are referring to something else. It seems that detailing follows a car wash? Excuse the niavete, but could someone fill me in? Thanks

just in case you are being serious,
taking care of the details for example, rain x on the windows, shiny stuff on the tires, dusting off the engine, polishing the exhaust pipes, quick wax spray all over, shiny stuff on the black trim, cleaning the leather, conditioning the leather, the list goes on and on!

same disclaimer - assuming you're serious:

it's sort of like "good", "bad", and other terms relative to your own judgement. "car wash" is like that too, at least the way used in common vernacular.

to some, a car wash is just hosing down the car. others require at least some vague soap like ingredient and brush/mitt/cloth. others include all major body surfaces, moldings, etc. maybe a wax, maybe not. so "car wash" is admittedly kinda not a very objective standard.

however, imho, "detail", while also still subjective, at least implies the upper range of whatever most deem to be a car wash plus at least one single thing extra that you don't do for whatever you call a car wash. in short, generally if you have your car detailed, you are having someone (or yourself) do the minute, small scale, fine work you would normally skip in your normal "car wash", no matter how extensive. also, again in my opinion, but while "car wash" is subjective about whether the interior is done, waxed, etc, the way most people commonly refer to detailing is that exterior and interior is cleaned, as well as a wax/polish involved.

i believe it would be an easy majority agreement that it is possible to refer to a "car wash" that includes everything but polishing/waxing and possible exlude the interior. but that it would be only a very small minority that would refer to something as a detail job if polishing/waxing wasn't involved.

I think Pete is referring to pinstriping, which in fact once did carry the "detailing" terminology (now a misnomer).
