Left my house yesterday and after about 1 mile a hear a gong and get a
"Tire Defect" message. I pull over into a parking lot, get out and look at
the tires. They all look fully inflated. I figure electronic sensor failure. Shut
the engine, restart, the message is gone. Another mile and the message
returns. All tires look fully inflated!
Stop at a gas station and check air. Rear drivers side tire showing 20 lbs.
Fill tire to 48 lbs and drive to my local "tire" guy. He pulls the wheel and
finds a nail in the tire. Now the fun begins as I watch him try to remove the
tire from the wheel. Not easy and not pretty to watch. With the low profile
tires, removal is quite difficult. Finally, tire is removed, repaired and remounted,
certainly not as difficult as removal. With my heart in my throat, I now examine
the wheel, it's okay.
Lessons: 1- Believe your message warnings. 2- It's almost impossible to tell the
air pressure by "eye" with our low profile tires. 3- My air pressure gauge does a
much better job in my trunk then in my garage. 4- Don't watch when your tire(s)
are removed from your wheels...or maybe you should, to prevent the installers
frustrations being taken out on your wheels.
