Yesterday I purchased some 10/60 for $8.52/liter from getbmwparts.com. In order to do so I searched under the part number, selected quantity 8, and then selected check out. This morning I received this email.
I realize the price is still fair and I am really not stressed about the additional $10. It is just the principle that bothers me. What do you guys think?
Dear valued getBMWparts.com customer,
Hello and thank you for your order. Since the oil has such little mark-up from BMW, we can only sell it at 9.75 per liter. If we sold it at the 20% discount, we'd be selling it below our cost. For this reason, we advertise it in the Fluids/Car Care section of our website at 9.75 per liter. We'll need you to log into your account and approve/not approve this change in order to proceed with the order. Thank you! -Ev getBMWparts.com
Although my dealer basically passes that at cost. No discounts on oil.
On to your error- They should honor their price- they posted it, they sold it. Of course a retail store is obligated, by law, to honor the lowest posted or advertised price- In California.
I'd point out that 8 liters is a small enough 'reward' for you having showed them the error. And mention that it might cause you to use Tischer and not give an online vendor out here in a western state your business.
they pulled the same thing on me about 5 or 6 months ago. Worst part was they held my order up for a week. i finally called and was like wtf is my order and they responded that they needed confirmation that I am ok with the higher oil price.
I asked if someone was going to call me and they had no clue. I am pretty close to them and usually get parts in 2 or so days.
Decent prices, but that shop at times seems to be run by 16 year olds...

I would have told them, NO,it is not ok to advertise one price and charge another. I would have told them that not only would I not buy oil from them, and pay more from another honest vendor, I would stop using them completely and tell all my friends about my experience, including the (fill in the number) members of the M5board community.
A letter to Roundel might also get their attention, as well as forwarding a complaint to the local Attorney General for unfair and deceptive trade practices.
Of course, one may not want to put that much effort into it.
Regards,
Jerry

Thanks you for letting me know that a mistake has been made on my order. I do, however, feel that legally the price difference is not my burden but rather yours.
I have started a thread on the BMW forums in relation to your price adjustment if you would like to see the opinion of the community that buys from you.
( There are many prices that we cannot update on the site, and that's why we state in our FAQ and policies sections that we reserve the right to update pricing at anytime. There are literally hundreds of thousands of BMW parts that exist on the online catalog and unfortunately, the site isn't smart enough to identify when there isn't enough mark-up from dealer cost to discount a full 20%. If we discounted the oil a full 20%, we'd end up selling it below our dealer cost. That's why we had to create our Fluids specials page @ getBMWparts.com (as Evan pointed ou below), because we can actually update/control those specials and their pricing from here.
Thanks for your understanding, we appreciate your support - )
That is the answer I got from them when I asked why they did not advertise the price they were going to charge me.

I'll throw the BS flag up on that one. It is your responsibility if you are going to sell products either on-line or brick and mortar you must honor your listed price. If you don't honor the price that is displayed, it called fraud and/or deceptive advertising.
