VANOS cost estimate nad symptoms

Hi, I have an e39 540 and I am ready to pass it along to the GF and get an M5. I found a guy will a excellent condition 2000. When a started the car there was a loud ticking sound. My 540 has some ticking of the valves while running but this was quite loud. I did record the sound. I know there are some VANOS issues with the s62.
I searched the board for some more information and it does not look like a fun repair.

I would like to know what the symptoms of the VANOS issue are and if you have gone through it what was the cost? (stealer or independent)

Oh an any other common issues I should look for? I know about the rear sway bar bushings being a problem.

First, on the main E39 forum there is a 'sticky' thread that is called a FAQ.... Read it, or all those related to buying and inspecting.

There is no such thing as one single 'vanos repair price'... and of course there may be nothing wrong with the vanos- just noisy like many are....

If you do a long enough test drive you will be able to tell if something is wrong with the vanos, uneven idle when warmed up, lack of power.
