my M5 won't start :(

After I got my lotus I didn't drive my beast much, I wanted to get used to the feel of the new addition. When I went to turn on the beast it cranked but it didn't catch, right when it should normally catch it made a winding down noise. I tried charging the battery and it didn't help, battery has power. I was going to call a tow truck and decided to try one last time and it started right up and worked everyday for a week then all of a sudden it was dead again. Now if I try to crank it, it tries as it should but dies out as before, now at the end of the winding down it makes a shrieking noise. Not so comforting. I did a search and from what it sounds like to my ears I'd think the car is starving for fuel, I don't know if it's a clogged filter, the fuel pump or the fuel filter...or maybe none of the above?

This happen to anyone else? any suggestions before I send it off and spend $150 on diagnosis at the stealer?

If you haven't done so, the first thing I'd do is take the battery in and have it tested under load. Measuring voltage at the post doens't mean one of the cells is not bad. That's an easy first step. If you find it's the battery, replace it and get a battery tender to keep it under full charge when not being used.

Sears had a 2 amp one one sale last week for $20 (regular price is $30). It should be up to the job...they're no brainers.

edit: still on sale!

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...s+%26+Boosters

hooks up to batt or thru ciggy lighter. I own 2 of these.

i once bought me something like that before to put in the sig lighter, but before i used it, i read the manual off that thing , and somewhere there was stated, dont use iff any electrical devices are in the car..meaning navsystem, dvd player, etc..xhen applyed trough the sigaret lighter system

i dont say they are bad,and dont want to start a yes/no debate on that.it was just noted in the warning page for my system.
so i never tryed it, too be on the safe side.

so be carefull with those, i would say.

BMW sells 2 (one branded BMW, the other branded Mini). The BMW one uses the cig lighter. The Mini one uses alligator clips. I prefer the alligator clips.
I have a few (and, I use 'em).

The BMW ones are more expensive, but they work just fine. Very slow charge, which is a good thing.

nerio02 is right ... be careful what you buy for an M5.

Sounds like your battery. Test it. With the car off you should get 12.6. While running, a volt or more higher. Load test is a good idea.

Are the battery cable showing any corrosion?

You could also have a parasitic draw issue.

How long did you crank it while you were trying to turn it over? 15 seconds is the max at any one time. Wait two minutes between attempts to cool it off.

I've attached a link with the selection guide. I have both a battery tender plus and two of the waterproof battery tenders. Both types work fine. One just puts out more current and has different charging cycle software. Just make sure you order the 12v model. Since you want be using it for a fast charge, just to maintain the voltage level, the smaller waterproof model gets the job done for less money.
