          Search is your friend

Okay so I did an oil change on my ///5 yesterday and I go and do the oil life reset, not working. the handy dandy little tool doesn't work, the reset by holding the left trip on the cluster isn't working, the scanner oil life reset isn't working. Sorry I work on some many different BMW's I kind of forget witch one is for this car. I know it is the second one after I did a search on this board, but in the search there was the thread about the freaky cluster unlock thing, and I tend to get distracted by cool new things such as this. So I am playing with the cluster and Test NR 02 is for the cluster. Great, I ran this test and low and behold, the stupid lights for the oil life are burnt out. only the fifth green light is working and the the yellow and red ones are there. So I guess I managed to reset the thing and couldn't even tell. So I have sent off an email to Leonora at BMWNA to get myself a new cluster. I have heard you really have to be nice but pushy. I am hoping owning 5 BMWs right now and several more in the past will let her see this isn't my first or last BMW.

Well just wanted to say a Big thank you to the guys in the past that have posted great little items that help everyone out.... And search really is your friend on this board.

          LadyKats,

Doubt this will help you, but if you reread the "secret menu" test descriptions in the DIY area you'll find that #21 resets the cluster. The OP of that thread cautions using it and none of the responders states ever trying it.

Gadget Freaks II: Fun you never knew you could have [secret menu]

Well I did it the 2nd day I had the car...just because...and because I have a CPO still anyway so I didn't care. FWIW the needles blipped all the way up and I think all of the lights came on. It looked like a hard reset. I have no idea if this will do anything to help, but I can tell you it doesn't break anything. I'd love to add this factoid to the secret menu thread, but alas for some reason that thread is "locked."

Not to be Capt. Obvious, but are you absolutely sure you got the reset proc. right. I had trouble when I did it because it was timing out on me or something. Had to do it like 3 times to get it, but it sounds like you do way more BMW work than me so this may be old hat to you...just a thought.

Also, any chance you think disconnecting battery for a while could help? As far a possibly resetting cluster brain that is....not lights specifically.

P.S. Shame on you! Unsearchable thread title. Boooo!

Thanks for the replay TMcNasty, Yeah, I am kind of sure that I did the procedure correctly. It is the same for my Husband's 03 E46. We did an oil change on it as well and had no problem with his reset. You have got to see the pixels that are out on the cluster, odometer says 55==6 should be 55806, and when the pixels to let me know the time or warnings, it's great if you can decipher code at high speed. I am trained to look at the nav screen when the clock dings at minute before the hour, as you would never figure out the time as it is displayed. But I may try that reset then, and sees if it helps with anything. Thanks for the heads up.
