Hello - new owner with cruise control question

Hello,

I just picked up my 2000 M5 in the Montreal area and drove it back to Edmonton - 3800 km's (2360 miles). I have owned and modified a 98 540/6 for 2½ years, so I'm not completely new to the E39, but the M car cruise control will not allow me to set a speed above 75 mph (120 kph). If I hold the increase speed arrow, the car accelerates to 120 kph, and then just acts as if I've touched the brake or clutch to disengage the system - the dash light indicating the cruise is still on stays lit.

Any ideas?
No codes or other issues apparent (although the sunroof doesn't function).

The car has about 38,000 miles (65,000 km's) on it.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Board!

Hey man, I did a similar trip last year. Bought my Beast in Montreal and drove it back to Saskatoon. I had a PPI done in Montreal to make sure it was solid and had no issues which it didn't. Did you get a PPI done? Please tell me you did. This is a must on the E39 M5 since very expensive to maintain.

You can check for codes first with a Peake Research scan/reader tool. If you don't have one, get one!!!

Maybe the memory of last speed set is stuck? (button to the left of the set/increase button) Perhaps disconnecting battery for a while and reconnecting will reset this?

I assume you've powercycled(turned off the cruise via the I/O button and back on) and tried to set a different speed?

What kind of gas mileage did you average on the trip?

I averaged 28.7mpg with a mix of normal and high speed driving.

Cheers and good luck with figuring this out.

Thanks for the welcome.
PPI at a Montreal BMW Dealer indicated the battery was weak, so that was replaced. No other issues. I have the Peake tool with no codes showing.

My mileage was very similar to yours until the last leg through Alberta - high headwind driving between 120 - 140 km/hr. It dropped to about 22 mpg for this. Through northern Ontario I was getting spectacular numbers, but that was at a slow 90 km/hr.

So, the short answer to my question is: there is something wrong with your cruise control function. You should be able to set the cruise wherever you like?

Thanks!

That's very wierd. I know roomate's old saab could not set the cruise over 90mph. But at least on my M5, I can and have set the cruise at 130+ before.

Make sure there is not a speed limit set on the other function in the nav screen? Otherwise I don't know...

That would only give you a warning sound when you hit the limit set but you can keep going.
