Another D7 code..

Last night when I was parking the car, I noticed that the fuel gauge is still reading half a tank, although I drove +150 miles all day. I was too tired to check so I left it till the morning. And sure enough when I turned on the car today the unpleasant yellow light was on and the needle was on E. I conducted test no. 14,and those are the results..
DIAG 1 D7 81 047
DIAG 2 90 84 000
DIAG 3,4&5 00 00 000

While filling her up, I noticed the needle is moving smoothly till full, and test no. 6 became 34L/31L/65L, with the 34L reading declining gradually while driving-which indicates the fuel pump is healthy..good.
I had a similar problem a few weeks ago,and the fuel sensor was replaced, but test no. 14 was slightly different, as follows:
DIAG 1 D7 81 155
DIAG 2 BF 88 000
DIAG 3 90 84 000 - WHICH BECAME DIAG 2 THIS TIME
DIAG 4&5 00 00 000

Now, is it the same sensor failing again?. Is it common to fail twice few weeks apart? or it is a different problem??

Regards,

Similar situation to mine. In my case, the sensor was replaced, but the dealer DID NOT reset the error. The 155 and 47 will decrement each time the car is started. I have no idea what the 81 is, but mine is the same 81.

I was told by multiple folks that it must be reset by the dealer.

I have no idea of what the 90 is, but I would have it investigated and reset.

It is also possible you have another failed sensor. Warranty applies to it as well. 1 year, if my memory is correct.

I suppose it could even be the guage.

(D7 is the syphon ... left ... pump)

I am wondering how many gallons your fill took. It should have been over 15.5 gallons.

Took 16.5 gallons to fill. And test 14 was all zeros after the sensor was changed at the dealer's under CPO. I think if it was just a resetting problem the needle would not be stuck half way while the car is getting low on gas. Which one did u replace? is the sucking pump relevant to this problem?. BTW the first one failed due carbon build up, in case this will add anything

True. It could be the guage.

It was, hence the "D7." (D7 = syphon pump failure) But, you said you have another "D7." That is suspicious. And, the "90" is also coming back. You need to find out what the "90" is telling you.

No, it wasn't carbon build-up. There was probably a carbon deposit on the sensor "spring," but that is caused from arching. Very common on all sensors in the gas tanks of all BMWs.

What did you computer say? How much Range and all.

Hum m m ...

Was the engine running when you read the last Test 14 measurements? The fuel normally returns to the left tank with the engine off. Since the readings are very close to level, it looks like the engine was off.

When I asked about the Range, I was wondering what is was when you refueled. Sorry for the confusion.

I would still want to know what the "90" indicates. It may point to the ultimate problem you are having.

So if the range was moving proportionally with the gas level, then it is a sensor problem rather than a gauge problem?. I dont know about the 90 yet but will stop by the dealer's tomorrow and ask the SA..
