Found my exhaust rattle-it's the suspension

I thought one of the restraints on my exhaust had come loose but when I got under the car I found the sway bar hitting against metal. Bracket is broken and it pulled from the drop link. Luckily I'm still under extended and CPO warranty so it goes in on Monday. The first shot is of the failed driver side. The second is how it should look.

Probably a better idea to get the stronger TCD brackets rather than replacing with the OEM that will end up breaking again in the future.

Sway bar brackets. Very common failure with these cars.

x2. Just got my set yesterday bimmer...and I'm under CPO as well.
BeastPower Motorsports, Inc. (5-series store) - BMW M5 (e12, e28, e34, e39, e60, e61): BeastPower Rear Sway Bar Brackets by TC Design for the BMW 5-series (e39) - 1 Set (2 brackets)

Of course it looks like your endlink failed in this case so go to BMW for that, but look into the upgraded brackets as well.

It would be cheaper in the long run to buy good aftermarket brackets. Under warranty, BMW is just going to replace the broken $10 bracket again with another $10 OEM bracket, which will break soon enough. It's really a waste of your time.

I went thru three of them before I wised up and bought some good ones, which are about $100.

You guys are right, I know I should buy the stronger brackets. This will be my third one in 2+ years. However, this is the first time it also took out the drop link. Up to now it's just cracked, not sheared off completely . I've held off buying the stronger ones for two reasons. First they've been replaced under warranty, but I agree there is a cost as far as my time. Second, I'm proving a point to BMW (not that they will listen). I've told them on several occasions that this piece is a weak link in their design that they should address. Since I'm already scheduled to take the car in on Monday, I'll go OEM one last time. I'll just order the stronger ones and have them available and change them out myself this Fall.

Anyone know if the issue was fixed on the e60's or do they suffer the same failures with their stock unit?

TMcNasty, your car looks brand new. Great work getting it to look like that. I'm at about 81k on my car by the way.

Hmmmm, that ECB's M5 that you can eat off of. I don't think he drives her often or cleans her every time he brings her in. Damn that is a pretty picture.
