M5 engine exploded view
All,
1. Does anyone have an exploded view of the M5 E39 engine. Have tried to search the net but so far without any result.
2. Anyone with experience regarding NOS mounted on an M5 E39?
3. Any suggestions if I need a better clutch than the original?
Sorry to complain but I don't like to be beaten by a Toyota Supra!
Regards
Anders

You mignt be able to answer all three questions at once!
Nobody likes to loose, but I wouldn't pin my hopes on beating Supras, unless you just want to beat the slow ones. The fast ones are out of reach.

If you want to run Nitrous an upgraded clutch will be necessary.
On many of our cars, the clutch cannot handle the M5 as it is for the most part.
I have spoken with a reputable aftermarket clutch manufacturer who has had first hand experience with our cars and their clutches and he has told me the clutch is simply way too small for a car with this amount of power and weight.
This information is in accord with my own experiences and thoughts on the clutch in the M5.
As for the Nitrous it sounds like a good idea. A friend of mine has a nitrous setup in his Corvette that is pretty much fail safe as far as user error. The system will only activate when the pedal is at wot and it is designed to shut off i think 1,000 rpm before redline, which prevents detonation from missed shifts.

Can't help you with the exploded diagram - I would love to see one!
Your car (stock) can trounce a Supra (stock). It is also fair to compare modified cars to modified cars - but this is a game you cannot win. There are Honda Civics running 9 second quarter miles, and 650Hp supras, and..... with sufficient $$, you get as much power as you want, but along the way you'll sacrifice engine and drivetrain longevity, driveability and your car's value. So - what would make you feel good?
This is one of the reasons I left my car stock. I like what it stands for in stock form, and I feel great blowing the doors off of stock supras, 'vettes, Porsches, etc. But once you start modding, as far as I'm concerned, all bets are off. You throw a boatload of money at it, and there will still ALWAYS be something faster.
Don't get me wrong - I think modded M5's are cool. Andy, Fred, and others here have done some amazing things with their cars and I think that are totally cool. I just don't think setting "not getting beaten by [modified] Supras" is a healthy, or even attainable goal.

Thanks,
So what other clutch do you suggest?
I am talking about Supras with minor changes that run mid 10's(402) with advanced tuning and 2 bar but no NOS!
I am also happy with it as it is and it is a fabulous "family" car!
To use NOS seems although to be a quite interesting way to get more out of the engine without putting a lot of effort and mess to the engine. So it would be great to learn about it from someone who does have the experience on M5. Everyboddy says that it should work but I would not like to be a test pilot!
Many thanks
Anders

*COUGH*
the supras that run mid 10's in sweden are not what I would call "minor changes". unless a $25.000 upgrade is minor to you? we are talking about 800-1000hp.
I would'nt call that increase/cost "minor"

Unfortunately i have not found a replacement clutch at this point. G-Power makes a couple of replacement units but i have not not been able to get through to them. If someone who speaks German could help it would be appreciated.

I used to get really annoyed when I get beat by other cars, especially the cheaper cost cars and those little modified Japanese rockets. It doesn't bother me as much these days as I know I have the ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE, the best car on earth. Straight line acceleration is NOT the way to judge the overall performance of a car, there are a lot more to it and the BEAST does good in just about every one of those categories.
Later,
Kenneth

Why not beat them at their own game?
Go buy a used Civic, modify the hell out of it, and laugh at the Supra
