WilliamsF1 seems to have been baiting Ralf lately, and now Sir Frank has praised Jenson again
A recent spate of comments about Ralf Schumacher from his own team have led to speculation that Briton Jenson Button may have more of a chance of returning to the BMW WilliamsF1 Team than first thought.
Schumacher Jr has a contract with the Grove team until the end of 2004, and so Button's only chance of a return was thought to be at the expense of Juan Pablo Montoya. Now, though, some have suggested that Schumacher's formerly rock solid position in the team may be threatened by the fact that his wages are so high.
The German has a powerful ally in the form of BMW, however, who is thought to be meeting the extra cost of Schumacher's new contract due to the fact that it wants a 'home driver' in the line-up. With Schumacher being outperformed in the latter half of both the 2000 and 2001 seasons by Button and Montoya respectively, there is now the feeling that Sir Frank Williams would dearly love to pair the Briton and Colombian together. Quite how important a German driver is to BMW may be put to the test.
Button has faced an immense struggle at Benetton in his second season of Formula One, after being loaned out by Williams for two seasons, in a car that has not suited his driving style and was slow in any case. Williams has learned his lessons the hard way, though, and is not keen to give up on the Briton just yet. "Jenson was clearly not in his best environment this year. Last year he was just outstanding, and that natural talent just doesn't go away overnight," he said. "I learned a lesson from Ron Dennis because he would never ever give up on Mika Hakkinen when I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole. I got that wrong."
Williams' option on Button for 2003 is believed to run out in August 2002. At this point the team boss will either have to recall him or release him from the four-year deal that was struck when he brought the Briton straight from the British F3 Championship.
