E34 m5 vs E39 m5 for sale prices

I was reading thru this months roundel and came across the cassified section and was looking at the m5 for sale and was shocked at the asking price diffrence

example
2002 m5 92k lemans blue / caramel all options new tires etc etc and cpo till 2009 hes asking 22900

and then the e34 crew

91 m5 jet blk \ blkwith 15k with a transmisson that was just rebuilt for a bad first gear sync going for 32000

93 m5 alpine white / black with 108 going for 22500

91 m5 black \ blk canadian spec with 123k on it hes asking 35000

whats wrong with this picture some one please explain im stumped i think e39 owners need to start asking more for there cars to bring the market back up to where it should be

those e34 sellers are dreaming. I saw those ads as well. NEVER going to get it, just wasting print ad space. You can ask all you want, but that doesn't make it the going rate.

A legitimate pristine e34 m5 with under 5-8k miles might go for about $30k US, there was a 3k miler on ebay with a 32k buy it now, not sure what happened to it.

Most US spec e34 m5's sell between 10 and 18k, the normal drivers vs the really nice well sorted cars. A good euro spec 3.8 goes for the mid to upper 20's, a touring around 30k.

Problem for the e39 is it was just too common. Many produced, on the 'normal' e39 production line, no hand assembly, no signatures by the build leader on the car etc. There are ten times more e39's i'd say off the top of my head, so some of the 'mystique' is missing from the older m cars. (Other problem is it's a better car for normal use, so they tend to get used and worn out).

Perhaps the price of the E39s will go up once the M10s come out and the E39s become older and ones in good conditions become harder to find.

I believe a better comparison would be like the E30 M3 compared to the E36 or E46 M3's. These are cult cars that means alot to a certain few BMW fanatics while to the rest of the population these cars aren't worth a dime. That's why you'll see these cars listed for sale for a while before anyone would buy one. Usually the seller sees it as a rare gem and prices it so while the buyers in the market sees them as old M cars thats slow and underpowered.

Does anyone really sell cars out of ROundel?

Always seems to be a collection of people who (a) don't know how to use a computer, or (b) think this is the way to advertise to people who don't know how to use a computer...

Values will come back up eventually. I think the cars are at or are nearing their level of full depreciation...maybe it has a bit further to go...and its made worse by the current fuel situation. I watched the value of my E30 M3 dip down to $5-6K for a while there, and now an original lo-miler can easily command $20K again.

Value only matters if you are selling, or if you smash it and the insurance co. lowballs you.

The E-34 chassis is regarded by many as the most "bullet proof" of the later BMW cars. The E-36 chassis is regarded as being one of the worst in terms of overall durability. I don't know where the E-39 will eventually fall in terms of general popularity, but I'm not sad I sold my pristine E-34 after getting into a similarly clean M5. Just my $0.02, but lots of folks like the "soul" of the E-34's.

There are a few quality issues with the e36 platform, but nothing out of the ordinary. A few obvious ones are door panels that are guaranteed to break or the window pop up mechanism when you close the doors. All the other common issues (radiators exploding, RSMs, CABs, fuel pumps are pretty common BMW failures).

A lot of people will agree that the e30 is the most solid BMW ever. That was certainly my experience.

The e34s had their fair share of issues too, no? Nikasil bore linings on the m60...

Anyways, I see a LOT of higher mileage e34 m5s in my area selling for 7-9k. I'm sure a nice one will command mid teens. To all asking over 20 - they are smoking some good sh*t.

The e34 M5 will never be the cult car the e30 m3 is.
