Does anyone know of an under carriage cover that is made of metal or something nicer/ stronger more abusable than the plastic one we have. I know I have seen one somewhere for an M3 and I am sure there was one for the M5 just can't remember where. Any help would be great as my plastic one is long gone. Trying to find an better alternative to the plastic crap.
Not going off road. The plastic get old and being original with almost 200,000 miles on the car pieces crack and fall off and become brittle.
I can see it getting hit with more stuff and breaking that way, but even still, those pieces are pretty darn thick.
Are you referring to the main undercarriage pieces or the ones under the fascia lip? The main ones are sturdy, and frankly, for anything to hit those with any force would require you to drive over a curb or other impediment. The front ones are fairly sturdy as well but can take rocks, etc at full force in a frontal collision, not to mention the occasional parking stop.
No aftermarket metal I'm aware of, but any good shop should be able to make you one. I wouldn't, were it me - just one more item to burn yourself on while working on your car...
I am not running the main pan right now, as the SS headers are dangerously close to the plastic. I need to get off my duff and put some heat sheilding on it and re-mount everything.

As a thought, you might use the pieces of aluminum backed fiberglass that plumbers use for soldering near wood. It is reasonable expensive, but I can't imagine that you'd need more than a couple of pieces and only where the exhaust gets very close...

I have a roll of aluminized heat barrier, just gotta build up the desire to go work in the 90 degree (yes, even at night) heat.
