With all my cars, I just drive lots of examples of them and then I'll just know. When that happens, the color combo, price, history, whatever.. they don't matter.
Just thought I would ask how you determined which car was "THE" one for you?
Was it the:
Sales price?
Color combo!-- had to be jet or carbon black with black/imola red int.
Year model!-- had to be 2002-2003 w/ low miles
History!-- had to have full service history... no accidents, no body work
Financing?
Impulse buy?
Refural by a friend?
Other?
Thanks For any and all info!
in red^^^ those were the determining factors for me... with of course a full mechanical check up and PPI done by nobody but myself...

Price & color combo.
A guy in a neighborhood used to drive a black on black M5 with titanuim trim while I still had my M3.
That's when I decided to switch and started looking for that partucular combo. Very classic.
And then I had this car offered to me for $13K. Looked up on Carfax, found out that it had been previously serviced on Long Island, called up the dealerships, they pulled out the service history for me... so I didn't think too long
In the end it was a combination of factors plus a bit of luck!

1. Year model,
2. Ride,
3. Color and finally
4. Full mechanical check up and PPI done,
didnt really care about the price because mine has got brand new engine replaced by the dealer under warranty, with 2 years extended warranty for the engine and all the hoses Didnt really bother paying extra, since the engine ran only 5000 kms till now

"Quality" was a combination of year, miles, and Service History. I pulled ~20 SH's and found none with everything on time; two were close. "Everything" includes: low annual oil, brake fluid, coolant. These, and the other items you see on SH, are a testament to the meticulousness and knowledge of the owner and dealer technician, together.
PPI and Carfax were nice "Quality" measures, but neither is guaranteed to be comprehensive/trustworthy.
"Value" was then a function of price and whether add-ons were present, like CPO, Extended Maintenance, etc.
That's just me though. I sure could have saved a ton of time had I not been so particular.
I wanted a carbon black low miler with caramel interior. Can't stand dark interiors - makes my body itch.
Not too many to chose from so when I found a decent one it was not much to think abt.
I searched for either an Imola Red with red/black interior, or LeMans Blue with the blue/black interior.
Needed to be either an "02" or an "03" with low miles.
In the end, I got the Imola Red one and I couldn't be happier.
The proverbial fateful (and unplanned) test drive of my Royal Red beast did it for me. I fished around for other M5's and drove a number of them as part of due diligence, but the RR/black was perfect in every way. There was no going back.
Later....one close look and one ride in PhillyM5's Area 51 s/c uberbeast did it for me again. I was up at nights thinking about acquiring 'El Diablo'
There's no reasonable place to go from here (except maybe the SmartCar...)
