RPM in 6th gear at 80 mph?

Hi All,

This is my first post to these boards as I just bought a 2002 M5 a couple weeks ago. So far I love the car.

So my question to owners of the E39 M5 is what RPM does your engine run at in 6th gear at 80 mph? Mine is doing 2700 rpm. Does this sound high? At 3000 rpm, the car does around 89 mph.

I also own a '99 540i sport, and at 80mph in 6th gear, it runs in the low 2000's. Hence my concern.

TIA,
-neal

2700 rpm @ 80mph in 6th gear is exactly right. 'Good news is, at an 80mph steady state for long distance, you should get ~24mpg. I do.

Wow, thank you so much for the quick reply. I have a prospective buyer for the 540 which I love, and I was starting to have doubts. Now I can sell the 540 with confidence.

I know exactly how fast my M5 is going at 3000 RPM, 'cause that's the speed I prefer to travel at.

87 MPH. (Usually where my Cruise Control is set.)

Thanks! Can I ask why 3000 RPM? For some reason, that's where I cruise too. But I have no special reason.

Seems like a happy place for the motor. Peak torque is only 800 rpm away.
Regards,
Jerry

But, if you look at a torque curve, it rises quickly to 3,000 RPM and then very slowly to 3,800 (it is very close to peak torque at 3,000). It is basically flat from 3,000 up!

Just looked at some old printouts and you are right!! Pull from about 2300 to 3800 and looks a lot like Kansas!!! As a matter of fact, it looks pretty flat until around 5k.

With that said, then the car should cruise well at anything over about 2500 rpm given the torque curve.
Regards,
Jerry
