I may be getting one in a week or so from my trip down to chicago last week. I got off the gridlocked hwy to go through town and noticed these boxes with blue flashing lights on top.

I also noticed rediculously short yellow lights. So short that I was behind a slow accelerating truck and my nose was in the intersection when the light turned yellow and my reare wheels were still on the stop line when it turned red.

I'm waiting for the ticket in the mail.

Bob

YES! Sorry, that's law and if you don't have an out, that's what you (and everybody else) has to pay.

(Is $ 381 a fair fine for driving in the carpool lane? I don't think so!)

Go see the judge. They'll give you a break on the size of the fine. In cali they drop from c.$450 to c.$180.

At some point you will simply say "Your honor, the state has failed to prove their case, there has been no testimony nor evidence that I was driving, I move for dismissal'. The slimebag 'judge' will ask for your side of the story. Say "I'd rather not, the state has not proved their case." (Note- be careful with these traffic courts...the judges do their best to get civilians to screw up, stuff they will not do when counsel is representing a defendant.)

You can also search around and see if there is anything going on with red light camera calibrations or broad scale contesting of their accuracy...

The business of not responding is kind of like the internet lore of paying the ticket with 1 cent MORE and thinking it will prevent them from closing out the ticket....If you read the ticket, it looks just like a 'real' ticket, with threats of court action, fines, bench warrants and arrest, right?

A
Not true in all states. It is a civil infraction and law has been set up to give the car OWNER the ticket. The OWNER can get out of the ticket if he/she states under oath he/she was not driving and WHO WAS DRIVING. Yeah, I know, it stinks, but it probably holds up because it is civil in nature, not criminal. No different than being requested to answer interrogatories or provide discovery, which in a civil matter means you have to turn over relavent information even if it hurts your case.

Place to fix it is in the legislature.

Most of the time, it pays to plead not guilty and go (or send someone) to court. A good argument is that the yellow is too short and doesn't conform to federal requirements for traffic control devices. " Defective" traffic light would at least take away the presumption that it is working properly and should otherwise cause a fair minded jurist to find the defendant not guilty.

Generally, if you have a good driving record, the fine will be reduced and if it is an infraction that carries points often they will be waived if you go to court. Worst case is generally the same fine and points as sending in the ticket, although you can get dinged for court costs and a small lawyer fee too.

Each state is different, my knowledge is based on Florida.

Regards,
Jerry

That's it! Like that movie Point Break with Keanu Reaves, wear a U.S. President's mask! Don't be surprised if you get pulled over by the police with them thinking you're a bank robber though!

"Is it the sounds that make a BMW a BMW? A BMW is designed to be heard, felt, experienced. So our engines sing. Our steering talks back. And we insist on offering manual transmissions in nearly all our models for drivers who crave them. The result is an almost telepathic oneness with the car. Just as surely as you can hear a BMW, a BMW hears you."

In California PAY it

because if not the DMV can suspend the registration or put out an arrest warrant. Or throw you on the national driver registry. Don't go there.

At traffic school for a speeding ticket I met a MB driving lady that got two of these in OC within a month or so and it was EXPENSIVE and the two pictures that have to be taken were crystal clear (I could see the label of the soft drink): 1. of you entering the intersection on a red light and 2. of you being inside the intersection on a red light.

That day at school taught me those photo tickets tend to be fair.

My Wife's pictures in Oregon (4, two shots of her car, 1 of her face, and 1 of the license plate that was so clear you could see the bugs on it), all suitable for framing ... (pun intended).

Actually one of the "tricks of the trade" is to shorten the yellow light at Camera equipped intersections. We are conditioned to go thru yellows of a certain length and so we assume the same at these intersections but then it changes much faster to red so they can catch you. Bingo, instant revenue for the city/state and also lot's more accidents (rear enders from folks hammering the brakes).
