Angry Failed California SMOG test! MAF's?

I failed the 15MPH test, test says the car is spitting out too much HC. Could the MAF's have anything to do with it and is it a sign that I need new ones? I have not done the tests on them but I will when I have time. From the readings, the SMOG guy said that my air to fuel ratio is fubared. I have not had a SES light or anything, Peake scan comes up with no stored codes.

Another weird thing is that my car failed the MIL/Check Engine Light also, but its not like I had my battery changed or the car has been dead due to the battery. I did have my Powerchip reflashed about 400 miles ago though.

Anyone have any input?

How do you drive your car, normally?

How did you drive your car just before the test?

How far did you drive your car just before the test? (Was it totally warmed up and then some?)

Do you have the latest ECU update (required in CA)?

Did the Powerchip guys "know" that you were possibly having Carbon Build Up problems?

Did you do a Dynamic MAF test? (Explained elsewhere on this site?)

In my opinion, IT IS TOO SOON TO BLAME THE MAFs.

You failed the MIL/Checl Engine Light????? Perhaps you need to expand on that a bit! Was the light on? Did it fail to illuminate when the key was in position 1? Did you get a 'dme not ready code'???? More info needed.

A very HOT car with HOT cats would have been the trick for your smog. Precat o2s, air fitlers should be on your list...when were they replaced? Do the MAF test too.

Just now read (MSN) the following: "Modern OBD II systems are so thorough that state testing centers increasingly are checking for any stored trouble codes and foregoing the traditional tailpipe emissions test." (Emphasis mine.)

Don't know if that has anything to do with your situation, though.

Also, just read in the same article: "Some states are considering an advanced OBD system that would allow them to do away with emissions testing. If the "check engine" light comes on, the system automatically would send a remote signal to state officials, who would contact motorists who don't have the problem corrected within a reasonable amount of time. Privacy advocates are criticizing the idea as being too intrusive. Depending on the system, officials might be able to trace where the vehicle had been.

Proponents say the system would free motorists from the time and expense of having to undergo annual or biennial emission testing, and it would help ensure that emission-related problems are detected and fixed more quickly. Oregon expects to launch such a program on a voluntary basis in less than a year."

Hold on to your knickers, guys and gals.

-Normal driving, I drive the M how it SHOULDNT be driven, sadly I drive slow with a light foot, I am one of those guys that always try to get the trip computer to go to the highest number LOL!

-I think my first mistake was this, the SMOG station was only about 6 miles away and I just woke up that morning and went over there.

-I dont think I have the latest ECU update for CA. (When was this?)

-Powerchip guys did ask me if I wanted their carbon build up "fix", I said no because I was not having any of the symptoms.

-Did not test MAF's yet, but will in a couple days when I am free.

-Is it TOO soon? I been reading that MAF's typically go bad around 50k miles, I have about 48k.

Light was never on, and no, the bulb is not burnt, it does light up when the key is in position 1. I scanned my car with my Peake couple days before the test and I did not have any stored fault codes.

I took my car to the stealer and had them smog it. If it does not pass they have to fix it under warrentee. If it is under 100,000 Per Cal smog laws. Check in your owners manal it says in there. Good luck

Be careful when taking it to the deal to fix the issue. I did it and had a nasty fight with the dealer SA and BMW NA about this, even though I felt I was in the right. In the end, BMW NA did a goodwill fix on it ($500 worth of labor for troubleshooting), which was to reflash the car.
