Mmmm recently had an M5 for the day, wasnt impressed !!!!!!

Yeap, gonna get a lot of stick for this but..........

Recently had a `W` plate M5 for a few days on a long loan test drive. Car was up for about £50K and I was considering buying it. However, depsite looking nice and being well screwed together, I wasnt impressed.

Not as quick as my Wrx Sti by a long shot, only just as quick as my supra and I felt the driving position was rather small considering the size of the car.

Im not disrespecting it or you lot but...... I was disappointed. I just found it a very quick saloon car. It felt very big, bargy even. I think the E46 Evo is a better more sportier car now.

So, now that Ive crossed off the M5, havent a clue what o buy now !!! Might have a sniff at one of those Holden GSV or whatever.

Nice one Bart.

195 posts on an M5 website before driving the car. Thinks it is a "barge". Wants to buy a Holden which err.. is a barge!!!

LOL.

one should not forget the M5 is a luxury performance sedan rather than a pure sports car.

Simon,

Why would you want to pay nearly list price for a W reg car when there are loads available at under 40K?? Having read your previous post I think the M5 is not the car for you and that a Turbo Japanese or possibly RS4 is ideal due to the far greater tuning potential and as they say in the US " more bang for your buck"

I think that most M5 owners (well myself and those I've personally met) buy the M5 for two reasons:

1) It's expensive - most people can't afford it or can't justify
spending that much on a car. This makes it pretty exclusive.

2) It's a beast. It's a stealth BMW. Most other road users see it
and think either "hey, it's a slow 5 series, time to blow past
it ... whoops, won't try that again" or "Wow. It's an M5. That
car has 400 BHP and Tiff said it was briiliant".

We all know how good it is, so does everyone else.

Each to his own.

Happy Xmas everyone.

Simon

#1- I am also skeptical like Bart and Max

but just in case this is sincere:

#2- I also had a similar reaction to my test drive of the M5. I was comparing it to an E36 M3 I was trading in. The M5 just felt heavy in comparison. But I liked having a smoother ride and the power was undeniable. I figured I would get used to the car. You know what- it took some adjustment but after a few months I discovered that underneath the luxury the M5 presents to you, there is a honest sporting ability for when you want to get aggressive. Its still a sports sedan as opposed to singular mission sports car. I think it was best said by BMW when they said the E39 M5 is supposed to be a car that the luxury aspect will astound the sporting aspect, and the sporting aspect will astound the luxury aspect. For someone who has the means, and who enjoys driving and has to have a sedan, IMHO, the M5 is the best car in the world.

Wow, thats a shock to hear. I just got back form Spartanburg SC where I and other M5 ers had the opportunity to flog the M5 on the track and I'm more immpressed with the car now more than ever.

The M5 is so smooth you probably didn't have the op to really discover the cars incredible limits. I own a modified Z06 Corvette and yes, the Corvette might be faster and all, but, it just doesn't compare!!!

The M5 has 90% of the power and handling but it does so many other things so well.

I just wish you could drive the car on a track, I'm sure you would feel differently about it. The M5 is just too smooth in the street.

I raced a highly modified Subaru WRX and because of the 4 wheel drive it got a big jump on me, at the end he ran a 13.4 to my 13.5 but my mph was 104 vs his 98 (high altitude track, 3000 ft). 6 mph at the end of the quarter is a huge difference. It might feel faster off the line, but trust me, the M5 pulls like a freight train and has the torque that no 4 banger (no matter how modified) will ever have.

I'm not knocking the WRX or any car, but for me there is just no comparison.

Pio
