Need help from audiophiles re DSP settings . . .

I recently rceived my 2002 M5 w/ the M Audio upgrade (enhanced bass). I am fairly happy with the sound but the bass is a little too "enhanced" to my ears, sounding boomy and a little distorted. First, is this just me? If not, are there any audiophiles out there who have programed the equalizer settings (the ones accessible as Memo 1-3 on the DSP screen) to minimize the boominess while retaining good bass response and clarity? (e.g., in the "80 mhz" range, 12 "bars" etc.)

Thanks!

/rich

Try this as your base. It was done by a fellow who measured his car interior with a "pink noise generator" to achieve the flattest, most even frequency curve. This is what you when listening to music. Minimal coloration.

Here are the results:

With TONE and DSP sliders to Center/"0" position, the M5's sound system generated too much energy at (Hz) 30, 80 and 120, and not enough at 480 Hz and way too much at 1 Khz. Above 1 kHz the frequency response was generally low.

On the DSP EQ, the following settings generated an almost even (flat) distribution. Almost because, hey it's a car not a sound studio!

80: 0
200: -2
500: +4
1K: -7
2K: +3
5k: +5
12k: +5

Room and Echo : 0 (This is a personal preference. Myself, I hate adding something the "band or artist" didn't add themselves)

TONE controls: I like mine at zero, but you should only use these to vary the sound depending on the source, Radio, CD, cassette... once you have set the EQ.

Give it a shot, and tell me what you think.

the problem with his measurements is that he did it while the car was not moving. when moving there is a little tweaking the sound system does to the signal- so you have to adjust for that- and there is also road noise that usually occupies frequencies around 200hz.
