Engine noise

Have recently moved from an RS4 to M5. Although a lot of people try to rate/ compare the cars, my view is that you cannot. They are totally different.

Anyway, I have noticed that at around 50 - 70 mph there is a wining noise just like wind blowing on a night (horror movie style) when you have your foot on the gas. It is definately something to do with the engine 'cause it goes away when you lift off.

Didn't get this with the RS4. Is it something to do with the M5 engine ?

Any ideas

Cheers

GuyT

PS it has also stalled twice now when rolling up to a stop with the clutch fully depressed.

Guy - doesn't sound normal to me. Mine doesn't make any such noises and it doesn't stall at lights. Suggest you have it checked out.....

I agree this does not seem normal. I would have it checked out immediately.

Just curious? Is this a brand new BEAST? or a used one?

btw: Like Greg's, mine has never exhibited this strange phenomenon??

Is it misfiring? ie: does it seem it is running on only 7 cylinders? if so, it could be a bad cam sensor?

at any rate, I would have it checked out by a competent BMW tech immediately!

Please keep us posted on this?.....

Does it whine only while cruising? Disappear while accelerating or after lifting off the throttle? If yes, I put my money on the differential. Both of my E39s resonate a little between 65-75MPH. It can be fixed, but does no harm. I personally like the sound - it adds "character"

I'm having the same whining problem while cruising between 2000-3000rpm. Noise is more pronounced in gear 6. In 4th gear between same rpm range it sounds a little too, and 5th too. Sound goes away when accelerating beyond 3000rpm or when let go of gas pedal.

Should I check this?

rvacha:
What's a diff? Differential?

I don't think the car now runs at 7 cylinders, cause I don't feel any reduction in performance. Same feel in the butt-o-meter as always

I had the same problem with my '00 M5 that I bought with 14,000 miles on it. After I installed the Dinan 3:45 gear, the sound was gone.

I had a whining noise coming from the rear of the car in the start of the year. It first would come in the early days at 80mph in 6th when out holding a steady speed on the freeway. It would go away as soon as l accelerated or slowed down, with only a very slight change of the throttle. I told them (BMW) it was the diff making the whining noise, but they couldn't seem to find it. Many months later it was getting worse and coming in at different speeds and not just 80mph. This time they found out that it was the diff. They had it replaced no probs and no cost. I think it had something to do with the wrong oil being put in it upon it being built. It was just wearing out, and that was with only 4,000 miles on the clock.
To help me find it l folded down the seats to help the sound come through.
Good luck maybe it's what might be going on in the rear of your M5.
